Many talented seamstresses, like Hazel Fellows (pictured), from Playtex were transferred to work with NASA on the continued design, development, and manufacturing of the spacesuits. Their work was a success: the suits kept astronauts safe in the extreme environments of space.
NASA had held a competition to develop and manufacture the suits. An unexpected entry arrived from the company behind Playtex, which specialized in women’s undergarments. Their suit prototype won; it was the only suit that passed testing and met all specifications.

We just watched the incredible Artemis II team fly around the Moon! But do you know who made the original spacesuits for the Apollo lunar missions in the 60s? 🌕
CAGIS started in 1992! So what were we like in the 90s? o.O

And the answer is.... Artemis from Sailor Moon!
Here’s a bonus question: can you name the cat sitting behind Dr. Gibbons?

They have extensive knowledge of the mission and transmit complex information in a clear and concise form; time is limited and there is no room for error.
Next time you see Mission Control, look for Dr. Gibbons!
Dr. Gibbons has the role of “capcom," short for "capsule communicator." She acts as a bridge between astronauts in space and Mission Control on Earth.
Capcoms are often astronauts and can put themselves into the shoes of the crew in space.
Have you been watching the Artemis II mission and wondering who sits in Mission Control on Earth?
Canadian Space Agency astronaut, Dr. Jenni Gibbons, is filling a key role!

Have you ever wondered what astronauts eat in space? Menu items of the Artemis II crew include apple cider, mac & cheese, and Maple cookies!
But how are their foods prepared and consumed?!
We are revisiting Dr. Larissa's visit to the Canadian Space Agency's food lab to taste-test REAL space food!

The crew is making history: Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, will be the first Canadian 🇨🇦 , Christina Koch will be the first woman, and Victor Glover will be the first person of colour on a lunar mission.
NASA is currently targeting an April 2026 launch date! 👀
The next mission, Artemis II, will be the first crewed flight of the SLS and Orion spacecraft around the Moon.
In the first mission, Artemis I, NASA’s new mega Moon rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), soared into the sky in 2022 and sent the Orion spacecraft around the Moon in an uncrewed flight test.

Are you ready for a trip around the Moon? 🌝
Four astronauts will be doing just that, very soon!
The Artemis program is a series of missions to the Moon for scientific investigation, technological advancement, and learning for a future Mars mission.

“Orangutans are asocial, not anti-social & sometimes gregarious. They are tool-users & tool-makers with cultural traditions. It would have been difficult to sample all this complexity over the 40 yrs that I've been studying them in the wild. So almost every day orangutans teach me something new."
Dr. Galdikas studied the orangutans of Indonesian Borneo for over five decades, and was considered the foremost expert on the species. She was a committed activist and used her expertise on orangutans to advocate for the preservation of their habitats.

Today, CAGIS mourns the passing of Canadian orangutan scientist, educator, and conservationist, Dr. Biruté Galdikas.
