Really excited to share our new paper from @ibe-warszawa.bsky.social protist team! ๐
We dive into protist symbioses and show how these interactions shape ecosystems and have played a key role in the evolution of eukaryotes ๐ฆ

I look at these kinds of protists ALL THE TIME. I have never seen them in situ like this. One cell. Absolutely remarkable. #protistsonsky

Bryozoa, or sea mats, are colonial animals. Depending on the species, they can have planktonic larval stages that look like the first video (a coronate larva), or the second video (a cyphonautes larva). Both are super fun to watch!

With many thanks to @zlatogursky.bsky.social and @dumack.bsky.social, it looks like this one is solved. My initial hunch was wrong. This is likely an amoebozoan in the genus ๐๐ฐ๐ค๐ฉ๐ญ๐ช๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ. I really appreciate their curiosity and expertise ๐คฉ๐. Found these relevant drawings (tinyurl.com/2me5ywvs):

My samples are still full of tintinnid ciliates! This one is poking out of its lorica to show us its lovely single-celled body.

Hi Bluesky microbiology/limnology/hydrology/field folks!
Has anyone used this style of cordless drill peristaltic pump for sample collection or field filtration?
The design checks a lot of our boxes (replaceable tubing, decent suction height, compact batteries), but doesn't seem widely available.

This beautiful little ice fish (Channichthydae) is taking advantage of being in a bucket full of copepods to help himself to many snacks. This is called โnet feedingโ & can scew gut content analyses in net caught organisms. Ice fish are the only fish without hemoglobin #oceanography #zooplankton ๐๐ง๐ฆ๐ถ

Not a great stack, but it gives you an idea of the glorious architecture of a Lagena sp. Foraminifera.

We escaped the ice and have been science hard for 2 days - four full stations and a big factorial experiment setup! Very tired but very happy to be working. We caught Antarctic krill at one station, and lots of salps at all stations. Love the Green krill guts full of phytoplankton! #oceanography ๐๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฆ
