North Hall stood roughly where the Bancroft Library is today. Photo: The student lounge in the basement of North Hall, around 1900. The students in the foreground are wearing the "plug" hats that identified them as upper classmen (gray for juniors, black for seniors).

On May 3, 1873 the cornerstone was laid for North Hall, the second building on Cal's campus and home of the humanities and social sciences. The upper floors were razed in 1917 as a fire hazard, but the basement was roofed over and used by the ASUC until 1923. Photo is from 1895.
