I can't say I have it down to a science. I write how it comes to me, let it sit for a bit, and read it. If I start skipping sentences, then I know I need to adjust my approach.

That is a great question. The best answer I have is it is a balancing act, because it is easy to lean into jokes and skip the substance.
I approached it by making the arcs focus on events rather than growth for the main character, who is 70, while the "sidekick" went through more subtle growth arcs
