Call me naive but never understood this:
Why can’t you take fast trains to any country in 🇪🇺?
Capital to capital.
Trains that stop fx 2 places in each country or 1.
🇪🇺 has existed for many years but still don’t have a decent rail infrastructure.
You often have to change after 4-500 km.

It's been what, 4 years(?) since the inflation reduction act passed, and yet I still default to thinking about the Irish republican army whenever I see IRA in a SoMe post..

AI is rewriting the rules of war while diplomats debate.
Autonomous weapons are already in use, but "human control" often means seconds to approve AI decisions. Ingvild Bode’s work at University of Southern Denmark shows how practice, not policy, sets the norms.

While Finland has amazing transit (been my favorite part so far!), it also has winter. So, we will be buying an EV (duh).

Picture of street filled with people when cars are prohibited, with a prominent sign saying “road closed.” Via Urban Truth Collecrive (Also, it’s a street, not a road)
How come they keep spelling “open” wrong?
Does that street look closed to you? Only if you’re a car… and presumably that’s the real problem. #UrbanTruth
A #podcast so good I have been saving and treasuring every episode until I have undisturbed time to listen.

Look, for my money the absolute game changer technologies right now are batteries and biosciences, not statistically modeling a mid conversation, but you do you.
Can we finally agree that burning wood for energy is a terrible idea and won't be carbon neutral, let alone carbon negative, in our lifetimes? BECCS using wood certainly shouldn't qualify as CO₂ removal (CDR).

Led by “extraordinary” growth of solar, clean energy pushed fossil-fuel generation into reverse
Solar growth of +600TWh in 1yr is the largest ever rise – from any source – excl rebound yrs

I was ambivalent about the oil at first but it's amazing for fieldwork in dry places like northern Greenland. It doesn't foam but definitely moisturises!
When Angela Rayner underpaid £40,000 in stamp duty, Richard Tice said it was "morally completely indefensible” and she should resign if she had “any moral decency”.
Now we learn he set up four shell companies that let him avoid paying £100,000 he owed in tax and to then transfer the cash to Reform
some things about becoming a parent are radicalizing in ways I expected - e.g being reminded viscerally how screwed we'd all be if childcare and other care work disappeared. but other things are radicalizing in ways I didn't - like experiencing constant spontaneous solidarity in ways big and small
It’s as if the Iran war was fought to sustain the Russian economy. Lifting sanctions for Russians does nothing for Americans. It just makes it easier for Russia to continue its war in Ukraine.
“Don’t make me tap the sign” meme It’s not ‘losing the pound’ it’s winning the euro
This is a good point, many UK scientists are at least as comfortable with Euros thanks to Horizon Europe - I wonder if the same is true of other fields?
Yes, and also the bit that I simply can’t understand is how joining the euro always seems to be presented as a problem for Rejoin, not an opportunity. A chance to join the single currency that has massively enriched its members? You should be biting our arm off.

At the same time, the moderation of networks such as X and Facebook has become more relaxed, potentially bringing traditionally fringe messaging into ageing hands.
