a screenshot excerpt from The Level Design Book that calls bullshit on shape and colour psychology. i've been teaching versions of this in my general ed art appreciation class and have become increasingly uncomfortable with it while lecturing, but it never fully surfaced (because i have a lot of other stuff to attend to) until i read this, which is when it really hit me. one of the reasons i couldn't go through with the human communication major is because i could easily cherrypick examples that reinforced my position on something, and the prof didn't call me out on that. the colour/shape thing is so much more culturally ingrained that it became so natural that it must be actively thought about.

The Level Design Book by @radiatoryang.bsky.social @andrew-yoder.bsky.social et al is informative but more importantly has personality. i want more educational resources to be idiosyncratic and fun

Did you know? Dizzy Sheep Disaster: EX for the Nintendo E-Reader only has 16kb of program code space- that’s half of Super Mario Bros! The game has to store some of its level data as graphics just to fit!

I had no idea. Cut scene and title screen art are all different. Apparently based on a manga series at the time (explaining the cute aesthetic) and it had been an MSX game first. I gotta dive into those.

Today I've worked on collision in the over world of our #nes game. We use 16x16 tiles so the grid is quite blocky. By adding special tiles that nudge the player it makes the navigation much smoother as you don't get stuck as easily. Works really well!

Broderbund NES UForce Manual (1990) : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive 1990 update to the manual for the Broderbund U-Force controller for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Picked this up on ebay several months ago for like $20 with the controller itself. Got a laugh out of the manual and went to share it, only to find just the plain boring version available! So I scanned it.

The full thing can be viewed here in all its unhinged glory.

Studies into the abstraction of cartridge designs into letter forms.

Lots of research into cartridge types, and pages of these as I tried to see what aspects of each cart to use, how much to abstract it, and what letters to assign them to. Turned out way better than it would have otherwise due to a bunch of great feedback from @supernatetendo.bsky.social as well.

Super proud of the way this logo turned out. Keep an eye out for some episode art too.

I’m starting to make final cards for Dizzy Sheep Disaster: EX! Part of the process has been printing and testing full sheets of cards.

This is done by cutting them into numbered strips, then running them through the e-reader to test the dotcodes

also reminder that BOTH stores have full raw .p8 ROM folders included now!! finji.itch.io/corgispace

you should have no problem loading these onto your weird gameboy things, and if you have pico8 or access to pico8-edu.com, you can also see exactly how each game was built, and even modify it :O

RIP Sam Kieth. His impact on my generation of comic creators cannot be understated. I shared some thoughts about The Maxx, the classified ads in the back, and my first published fan art! Full blog post here: yaytime.com/blog/rip-to-...

Flag of Brazil

The Brazilian flag is one of the best, this is just a fact, but what is going on with all these stars in the blue circle? Why are they scattered like this, unlike the field of stars of other flags (eg US)? Which stars are these and why these?

We haven't posted in a while. Triple Jump is very technical and less visual currently.

But here's how the 512KB MMC1 Triple Jump ROM allocates its space.

The circled areas are small islands of unused space that we're hoping to tap into. They add up to a whopping 2KB! #NESdev

In Creeps, there's certain benefits to being on the ground that may not be immediately apparent. For example, certain enemies need to be tackled before you can kill them. #nes #nesdev #indiedev #biocreeps

Super Bat Puncher never had a publicly released version past its demo. Instead, the dev moved on to other work (Micro Mages, Böbl, Spacegulls, and more). The SBP demo eventually received a standalone cart release, but it's still just the demo.

If y'all haven't played Spacegulls, give it a go.

In case there's any doubt (and for anyone who knows me, there shouldn't be)... this is my AI policy, specifically as it applies to youtubers, streamers, and other content creators:

a🧵, but the tl;dr: *if you want to cover what I've worked on, and plan to use genAI, DON'T.*

3 weeks ago 7 1 0 0

That would be preferable. Thanks.

6/ Anyway, (as I said last we spoke) I had long been a fan of your homebrew coverage prior to B.O., and I still eagerly look forward to the day when you pivot away from using AI to promote our games. Until then, though, I'd appreciate you passing over any work of mine.

Thanks! ^^

5/ Even if the coverage were to gain us a net positive in terms of audience, it would be hypocritical for me (a staunch opponent of genAI in all its applications) to risk passively benefiting from it (a responsibility I may have failed to perform in the past, but am seeking to correct now).

3 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

4/ On top of that, it's really quite disrespectful. My child and I designed all of the Miroh Jr. characters together, as an act of love. The fact that sharing that with the world now means I have to see these soulless, mangled reinterpretations of it is truly quite stomach-churning.
