That is Lenny’s scary Silvetia monster! Watch out for its sea star sibling lurking around the lab too πŸ‘€

A group of marine ecologists on a rocky shore. The one in the front is smiling and holding a tangled mass of seaweed in one hand while giving a thumbs-up with the other hand. Other lab members are pointing and smiling.

Our lab is awesome! We spent the afternoon low tide together, including collecting seaweeds for functional trait measurements. It was Noah’s first time sampling, & he got to use the dynamometer to measure attachment strength of this *massive* specimen of *Gelidium robustum*. @hannahhall.bsky.social

How do we move toward generality in linking intertidal biodiversity to ecosystem functioning? Seaweed functional trait measurements! We use light tables to measure traits such as surface area & perimeter. #PhycologyFriday @intertidaleco.bsky.social @hannahhall.bsky.social @jngriffy.bsky.social

Had a successful field site scouting trip last week around the University of California, Davis Bodega Marine Lab and Gualala, CA. Looking forward to our sampling when we return during the summer.

Having successfully completed my two-year journey, I am happy to share that this summer I graduated magna cum laude from the International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea) with an MSc in Marine Conservation and Ecology. Thanks to CCMAR & the rest of my hosting institutions!

Laying out transect tapes on a rocky shore. The researcher in the foreground, high on the shore, feeds out the tape, while a second researcher stretches the tape across a wave-swept intertidal reef.
