Diminishing Student Effort If there's a way for students to take a shortcut when learning, they'll usually take it. I'm not sure they understand how that shortcut negatively impacts learning long-term.

1) Although my #Saturday3 is usually the written word, this short video from @blakeharvard.bsky.social caught my eye. The tagline "If there's a way for students to take a shortcut when learning, they'll usually take it" is an important message!

Diminishing Student Effort If there’s a way for students to take a shortcut when learning, they’ll usually take it. I’m not so sure they understand how that shortcut negatively impacts learning long-term. Here’s a short video where I explain how I talk with my students about this, including some useful analogies, to help them to see that the mental effort is worth it in the long run.

Favourite article for #AberPGCTHE. In my seminar, they read Chew's article in advance. I start with quick retrieval practice of the 7 points. Then they type examples from their own experience into a shared doc and we discuss. My students are mostly new HE lecturers.

Doesn't matter that I teach AP students. Generally speaking, they don't know how to study.

Today, we're going back to the basics of flashcards. So powerful for learning when done correctly.

Don't make learning more complicated than it need be.
