Mémoire, Histoire, Les Disparus : écrire la Shoah pour la prochaine génération | Collège de France En s'appuyant sur son expérience de recherche, d'écriture, puis de tournée de ses « Disparus » à travers le monde, Daniel Mendelsohn explore la signification de la Shoah en tant qu'événement à la fois historique et littéraire, à mesure que le temps passe et que l'événement appartient à une nouvelle génération d'écrivains et de lecteurs, qui n'ont plus de contact direct avec l'événement lui-même. De manière un peu provocatrice, il suggère que l’injonction « ne jamais oublier » est, par essence, anti-littéraire : la littérature – parce qu’elle forge un récit vaste et gérable à partir d’événements historiques pour que les cultures puissent l’utiliser – doit « oublier » les histoires individuelles, lissant et façonnant des souvenirs particuliers en paraboles dont nous avons besoin pour vivre.
