Spent Saturday with President Obama and New York's Cutest — turns out my first name is Mayor and I need to be doing more squats.

Here’s to building a City where families can thrive and every classroom is full of this much joy.

Didn’t that have an animated sequel? Or maybe a prequel?

I love that Yu kept sneaking Howard the Duck into group shots

Fair! I don’t say that to say I want the direct to video features to go away, because I love them. I just agree that the ideal medium for these characters outside of comics is animation, and I’d love to see more big-budget premium animation of these characters. Like, it’s shocking how few there are

Variant cover for Superman/Spider-Man #1 by Doc Shaner, featuring Spider-Man driving up the side of a building in the Spider-Mobile, and Superman driving the Super-Mobile, fending off attacks from their respective villains. It was a lot of work, thank you for your time.

Here's my variant cover for Superman/Spider-Man #1 without the text, featuring the vehicle that climbs walls and the other one that punches. Because I knew what to do with my one chance to draw Spider-Man.

All in all? I adore this book. I’m mad I didn’t come to it sooner, but I can’t wait to read more

One observation I had is the lack of lightning-hurling we get in these early issues. I think he manipulated the weather two (maybe three?) times in this whole volume. He’s much more prone to hitting things either with his fists or his hammer. Interested to see where the transition happens

And with the Absorbing Man, I think Lee and Kirby finally find an earthbound threat worthy of Thor. Not that the other villains were bad, but Absorbing Man seemed so fully formed from the jump, and gave Kirby an excuse for some very exciting visuals.

Speaking of leaping off the page, this volume shows off what makes Kirby’s run so beloved. The art just takes a leap as Kirby shows off chaotic action scenes, sweeping cosmic vistas, and larger than life characters. The trajectory to things like the Fourth World and Kamandi are very evident here

Hercules is a highlight here, and it’s obvious why he continued to appear even beyond this title and quickly moved into the Avengers. He leaps off the page

Don Blake is almost a non-factor in this volume as the stories veer away from standard marvel superhero faire and more cosmic, mythological stories, complemented greatly by Tales of Asgard really coming into its own with longer, multi part stories

I just finished Essential Thor volume 2, and if volume 1 was the book finding its footing, volume 2 is the book hitting its stride! 🧵
