This text outlines arguments against adopting permanent Daylight Saving Time (DST) in Alberta, focusing on geographic location and health impacts. Geographic Mismatch: Alberta is located significantly west of the ideal longitude (\(105^{\circ }\text{W}\)) for the Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7) time zone. Solar Noon Delay: On standard time, solar noon in Calgary already occurs around 12:50 PM, similar to a typical DST solar noon, making MST function like DST. Health and Safety: Permanent DST would delay sunrises, with Grande Prairie seeing sunrise as late as 10:19 AM in December, depriving residents of necessary morning light and disrupting circadian rhythms. Benefits of Earlier Light: Aligning time closer to solar time promotes better sleep, lower risks of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and improved academic performance in children.

They are crucial for forest health as they help disperse seeds from the fruits they consume. They seldom descend from the canopy to the ground.

Our lab has the world’s largest collection of bird brains (as far as we know). And recently wrote a book on what we know and don’t know about bird brains:

Incroyable!! Nos amis à l'Obervatoire d'oiseaux de Tadoussac were in the front-row seats for a big show: a reverse migration brought on by unique conditions, featuring 121K Dark-Eyed Juncos and 36K American Robins. Not a typo! Merci de documenter ce phénomène exceptionnel! ebird.org/checklist/S3...
Chatted with circadian rhythm expert Michael Antle about Alberta's move to permanent DST
He says he was the UCP's first call during their consultation process- but that they ultimately ignored the evidence that says permanent standard time is best for our bodies

You absolutely SHOULD NOT go around telling people that data centers are full of gold, silver, palladium, copper, and that the data centers are almost entirely unstaffed.
An update: this Robin had advance notice of a case of academic misconduct in my class. He is staring disdainfully at the student…

We usually have a couple visiting our yard on the west side, but the past several years the male or female has been killed by someone's f***ing cat.
At Park Lake, but there are lots of robins around. They are largely sticking to treed areas near water. Nicholas Sheran had dozens last week and Popson Park had plenty this morning.
A medium sized songbird with brown head, back, wings, and tail and an orange-red neck, chest, and belly is standing on some dead reeds on the rocky shore of a lake. He is looking straight at the camera with a look of disdain.
This American Robin knows what you did and he is not happy about it.

A large songbird is singing while perched on a fencepost. He has a streaked brown, black and white back, head and wings and a bright yellow neck and breast with a black "necklace". His beak is wide open and eye partially closed as he sings loudly.
Lots of western meadowlarks belting out their songs this morning.

Photo of an immature male Gang-gang Cockatoo on the end of a thin broken branch. one foot is holding onto the branch, the other is raised as it repositions. The bird is grey with bars on the ends of all its feathers in colours ranging from cream to yellow to orange, with some green washes on the wings. Is head and crest are feathers are partially bright red.
As before, but the bird is lower on the branch holding onto it with both feet and is now facing down.
This guy again.

A brownish-grey deer with a white muzzle has his very large ears up and is facing the camera. On top of his head, two large bumps can be seen. These are the base of his new set of antlers. In the background are a few spruce tree trunks and a snow covered forest floor.

How do UCP members deal with long haul flights? Do they just hold it in so they don’t have to sully themselves in a unisex bathroom? And at home I can only assume they have his and hers bathrooms and require a cheek swab from visitors before directing them to the facilities?
Grad school: to be successful in a future career you're going to need to focus on THIS ONE THING for the next 5 years.
The actual career in question: you can't focus on one thing for more than 30 minutes at a time and you have to keep switching between 1000 things endlessly

Last week I was treated to 7 rough legged hawks hunting in pastures in the Alberta foothills. They will soon be en route to their northern breeding grounds and red-tailed hawks will fill their hunting perches.

Since it is quite clear that my institution's admin are monitoring faculty accounts:
If you are visiting a faculty member's lab during an open house, it is not acceptable to talk over the top of them when they are trying to explain their research to you and members of the public.

Publication seems a REALLY long way off, but do reach out if you'd like to schedule a book signing, talk, reading, podcast interview, exhibition, or any combination of the above to help get A New Unfeathered Bird off to a flying start next year.

A pair of Powerful Owls roosting together in a Brisbane park. The female, on the left dismissing the myth that males and females can be distinguished by head shape. Males supposedly have flatter, squarer heads, but we've found head shape is more dependent on an owls mood and weather. #birds #wildoz

Expect to see dead ground squirrels above ground, dead dogs and other pets, as well as a wide range of poisoned hawks, owls, skunks, foxes, coyotes etc.

Most of rural Alberta won’t care. They are out worshipping internal combustion engines most of the day anyhow. I left my parents cabin earlier than anticipated because I couldn’t deal with the sound of chainsaws, quads, leaf blowers and a tractor all coming from a single property
