The Lyceum was pretty interesting inside too- very unique building. Plus of course the genius of its entirely fake show facade!
Charles Mckean describing it in the Scottish 30s: “It seems, therefore, that by the time of the War, the cinema was indeed about to achieve its true architectural form”

Buildings at Risk - SAVE Britain's Heritage SAVE's Buildings at Risk register highlights historic buildings that are vacant and whose future is uncertain. Our central aim is to raise awareness of these forgotten buildings and provide a platform to advocate for their retention and reuse. SAVE has been compiling a register of Buildings at Risk since 1989 and it has been available online for almost 20 years to Friends and Saviours of SAVE. In 2025 we made access to the register free to all as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.

Nominations are open for the Buildings at Risk 🏛️

SAVE Britain’s Heritage is seeking entries from across Scotland to spotlight historic buildings at risk and support their reuse.

Sprung!

Twice in the year, around the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the sunrise shines right along Ingram Street, turning the Iron Duke, his steed, Copenhagen, and even his traffic cone hat into a shadowy work of art against the great doors of GoMA.

From the Point of View of a Cat
This is my Man. I am not afraid of him. He is very strong, for he eats a great deal; he is an Eater of All Things. What are you eating? Give me some!
He is not beautiful, for he has no fur. Not having enough saliva, he has to wash himself with water. He meows in a harsh voice and a great deal more than necessary. Sometimes in his sleep he purrs.
Let me out!
I don’t know how he has made himself Master; perhaps he has eaten something sublime.
He keeps my rooms clean for me.
In his paws he carries a sharp black claw and he scratches with it on white sheets of paper. That is the only game he plays. He sleeps at night instead of by day, he cannot see in the dark, he has no pleasures. He never thinks of blood, never dreams of hunting or fighting; he never sings songs of love.
Often at night when I can hear mysterious and magic voices, when I can see that the darkness is all alive, he sits at the table with his head bent and goes on and on, scratching with his black claw on the white papers. Don’t imagine that I am at all interested in you. I am only listening to the soft whispering of your claw. Sometimes the whispering is silent, the poor dull head does not know how to go on playing, and then I am sorry for him and I meow softly in sweet and sharp discord. Then my Man picks me up and buries his hot face in my fur. At those times he divines for an instant a glimpse of a higher life, and he sighs with happiness and purrs something which can almost be understood.
But don’t think that I am at all interested in you. You have warmed me, and now I will go out again and listen to the dark voices.
Translated by Dora Round; revised by the editor. Originally published in Intimate Things, 1935.

Hopefully, some good news coming re. the reopening of the A-listed Langside Halls.

Built in 1847, as the National Bank of Scotland, in Queen Street, the building was moved stone-by-stone to the edge of Queen's Park in 1902.

There comes a point in every quest through the newspaper archives at which you realise you have left sanity a long way behind.

This is Harry, the Singing Hippo (1964).

Mid-C19th five-pound banknote including a coat of arms with dragons.

Since we appear to be arguing about whether there should be animals on banknotes, and if so which animals, I'm going to point out that this is the five-pound note issued by the Dundee Banking Company in 1845, and it had dragons on it.

Lifelong achievement unlocked: attending a recording of a TV show tonight at the iconic BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane, London. Not only that, it was TC3, where much of 20th Century Dr Who was recorded from William Hartnell right through to Sylvester McCoy. Very exciting!
QI was also good.
