New article (link in blog entry below) on how the old story of "people arrived and destroyed the Madagascar environment" misses a chance for much more nuanced investigation. Who? What? When? Where? Why? are crucial questions. christiankull.net/2025/07/01/g...

Ok, an anecdotal image - but this is what structure protection looked like in the 1935 Malibu fires. What a change in scale and character - of fire, of the built environment, of firefighting capacity (CCC boys then). Only the inevitability of fire in some form is constant.

Conserving Biodiversity without Preserving Settler Ecologies - Edge Effects Charis Enns & Brock Bersaglio trace connections between colonialism, settler ecologies, and conservation in Laikipia County, Kenya.

The road to conservation in semi-arid lands still goes straight through the thicket of colonialism: protecting the rights of Indigenous pastoralists and their rare livestock. This is both a practical question and a deeply ethical one. edgeeffects.net/conservation...
