We’ve also got to stop imagining that this will all somehow stop and go back to normal overnight once Trump makes some specific key mistake or, eventually, leaves the stage entirely.

We are a decade into Trumpism. Whatever comes after him for the GOP isn’t going to be a McCain or a Bush.

We want to think that this isn’t as bad as it is. We want to tell ourselves another court ruling and the midterms will fix this, put Trump in his place.

But we are much further down the road to tyranny than we want to admit.

We are doing politics with version of America in our heads that doesn’t really exist—or, at lest, not fully.

Trump’s portrayal of American cities as war zones is, of course, not based in reality. But neither is the persistent belief among many we have not already hurtled into authoritarianism.
