Life Blood: Cultural meanings of blood stem cells and transplantation in the context of laboratory grown alternatives : Find an Expert : The University of Melbourne <p> Hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT) are a mainstay treatment for people with conditions affecting their blood and immune system. Transplanted cells are sourced from matched donors, or the patient themselves. However, finding a suitable donor or sufficient cells can be challenging and limit treatment outcomes. Recent advances in stem cell science means that future treatment could involve laboratory grown cells (1). Such developments are embroiled in hope for better futures, but also concerns or ambivalence about technological interventions that are not ‘natural’. This Melbourne based PhD project will explore the cultural significance of blood stem cells and transplantation in the context of possible future treatments. The project will seek to gain insights on what people understand about blood stem cells and current treatments involving stem cell transplants, including how their views are shaped and what matters to them. The project’s goal is to provide a rich and nuanced background for future public and patient engagement that will influence the ongoing research being undertaken at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in developing laboratory grown transplantation products. </p> <p> This interdisciplinary project will draw on a range of methods refined in dialogue with the successful candidate’s profile and interests, and could include (a) literature review of earlier research on attitudes to HSCT and laboratory grown alternatives alongside related ethical considerations, (b) a discourse analysis of news media and cultural depictions (such as in science fiction) of HSCT and future products, grounded in (c) qualitative interviews with scientists and clinicians working in the field and public engagement workshops, or other methods which the candidate finds relevant. </p> <p> The project is supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine, reNEW (Novo Nordisk Foundation grant number NNF21CC0073729) and will be supervised by researchers at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, the University of Melbourne and the University of Copenhagen. </p> <p> The student will be enrolled through the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne. While they will be physically located at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, they will also be invited to join activities and learning opportunities through the University of Melbourne Faculty of Arts, including the new Medical Humanities Research Lab initiative.
