A sculpture of the goddess Minerva with a number of books, an owl and a theatrical mask on a deep wooden drum. It is situated on the corner of two streets, perched atop the slightly projecting shop window and doorway. The street signs read High Petergate on the left and Minster Gates to the right. An inscription on the drum of the sculpture explains that it is Minerva, goddess of wisdom and drama, made by John Wolstenholme in 1801.
The sculpture of Minerva was part of a makeover for 1 Minster Gates and the adjoining 38 High Petergate, York. The 15th century timber frame building was rebuilt as a pair of houses in the late 18th century but the ground floor was made into a shop.
