But did you know that the equality rights section became law three years after the rest of the Charter, so that provincial & municipal governments had time to revise their laws & policies so they respected everyone’s equality rights.
•1982: Charter signed🇨🇦
•1985: Equality rights came into force
Graphic image outlining five facts about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
🇨🇦Charter anniversary day🇨🇦! April 17 1982, Canada's Charter of Rights & Freedoms came into law.
Canadians rank the Charter of Rights & Freedoms as our most important national symbol, beating hockey, caribou, the beaver as national icon (according to Stats Canada).

This little 'crisis' was an opportunity, a lever to lift us closer towards shifting away from #motornormativity, and our PM (or his cabinet) failed to see it.
@mark_carney.bsky.social
What is my PM thinking?? A gas tax holiday? Stupid plan! If @mark-carney.bsky.social had announced the excise tax $ was going to be specifically diverted to #municipalities to allow commuters to bus for free, for eg, that would have been a message that showed 🇨🇦 #values affordability + environment.
WATCH THIS: This is still possibly the most comprehensive interview I’ve done on smart urban transportation for better cities. Filmed in Vienna for a planned Paris-based documentary that never got finished, but he put it on-line for me. Watch it, quote it, and please help spread it around. Thanks!
How can we do this in Canada?
A sovereign data center is a plus. BUT does it make sense to put a hot bomb-&-spy-magnet in a highly populated, southern city? Better= remote from US & Russian borders & big populace. Gimli or Cold Lake = beautiful places to live, 2 hrs frm research unis & intrnl airports. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
A old tweet from a magnificent human taken from us way too soon.
I sure miss the good doctor. Here’s an excellent tweet from almost 4 1/2 years ago.
“If people worldwide biked at rates of Dutch, avg 2.6 km per person per day, global emissions could fall by 686 million tonnes of CO2 annually, comparable to Canada’s total annual emissions … For short trips, cycling is often faster, cheaper, and healthier” www.nationalobserver.com/2026/04/07/o...
Maybe they all can strategize about those issues at convention in May: canadianlabour.ca/convention20...
In the meantime, I hope @canadianlabour.bsky.social has already invited @avilewis.ca to speak?
(Being in Winnipeg, it'll mean he & #WabKinew can hang out again, too).

HOWEVER: it is time for 🇨🇦 unions to face some member issues they dodged in 2015: the climate change deniers, the Poilievre-bros who vote CPC, the anti-taxers, the "♂️ unions" (trades/transport) who've been letting the "♀️unions" (RNs, teachers & public servants) take the strike risks, etc.
But any speculation that not electing Ashton = today's @ndp.ca going soft on labour is no more true than eschewing @tonymcquailndp.bsky.social = anti-environment, or not electing #TanilleJohnston (yet!)= anti-Indigenous or anti-women. (I do 🧡 Ashton for re-inserting *Class War* into our lexicon🙏🏼)
It's a no-brainer that the new 🇨🇦 #NDP leadership team under @avilewis.ca will be working closely w/ Canada's unions -as always & as it should be: workers are the heart of any community, & social democracy movement too.

1. One of the things I mention as a secondary issue in this week’s column is a lie so deeply embedded in official narratives that we seldom even notice it: capitalism = “free markets”. In reality, capitalism is *the opposite* of the free market.

Governments sit and watch while oligarchs purchase our politics, as if it were just another asset to be monopolised. For the sake of democracy and our own survival, we need to get the money out. Our political systems must belong to us and us alone.

Trump is threatening further and greater war crimes in Iran: "completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants... and possibly all desalinization plants!".
This directly contravenes the laws of war.

Heartbreaking news. Stephen Lewis, a committed socialist, set up the Stephen Lewis Foundation to fight AIDS in Africa. I was part of his Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign.
My deepest sympathy for Avi Lewis and his family. 💔💔💔💔

Stephen Lewis has gone to the angels. He was a relentless fighter for justice. When I was 9 my Granny (an immigrant mining widow) made me sit in front of the TV and listen to him speak about compensation for mining victims.
His passion and commitment stayed with me.
