The SUBJECTIVE guideline I give my clients in session is, if you would be comfortable doing what you are doing with a 7 year old in the room, then it's totally fine. If you would be uncomfortable, then we aren't going to do it.

Have you experienced subjective versus objective boundaries before?

One of the best ways to get better at setting boundaries is by practicing saying boundaries out loud. You can practice with a friend.
This sort of roleplay is great for seeing how your body feels when you set boundaries with people. Does your heart race, are your hands getting sweaty?

I wanted to address an issues when it comes to setting boundaries; having limiting beliefs of yourself.
Limiting beliefs include:
"I'm not good enough"
"I have to put everyone else's comfort above my needs"

If we don't address those limiting beliefs, setting boundaries is still going to be hard.

With an understanding of these factors, accepting nonverbal consent can absolutely be appropriate. Just remember that there is always some measure of risk for misinterpretation.

Nonverbal consent is tricky! Non verbal consent is always at least a little bit of a gamble, but here are the factors that make it a healthy risk
1️⃣Long term established relationships
2️⃣Confirmed history of boundary setting
3️⃣Equally weighted power dynamic
4️⃣Level of risk
5️⃣Appropriate context

You can consent to something, and still have a bad time.

Enthusiastic consent IS the standard, without a doubt. But we need to have space for the recognition that sometimes we can consent (verbally and enthusiastically!) to something and just not have a good time.

How do you feel about this?

Let's look at FRIES. Fries is an acronym that helps us remember 5 of the key aspects of consent.
1 Freely given
2 Reversible
3 Informed
4 Enthusiastic
5 Specific

Have you ever heard of FRIES before? As a consent and boundary educator, I find it very helpful, although it can be limiting.

The Cuddle Party tickets keep selling out. I adore you all for that! There's another one schedule for January 17th.

I've changed ticket vendors. Now I use Humanitix instead of Eventbrite. This company charges you less fees!

What this looks like with clients:
• Naming feelings: “Right now I feel…”
• Making clear requests: “I would like…”
• Setting limits: “No, not right now,” or “Yes, with this change…”
• Celebrating wins: “I did that. My body can do that.”
