For #IWD, we recognise the women of the U.S. Signal Corps. Called the "Hello Girls," 223 American telephone operators served in France, relaying orders to & from the front lines for the A.E.F. They had drill, wore uniforms & held ranks, but weren't recognised as military veterans until 1971.

As the Olympics wrap up in Milano-Cortina, us winter-minded folks are already looking forward to the 2030 games in the French Alps. In 1919 some lucky American soldiers went on leave to Chamonix, where they enjoyed skiing and snowball fights! Chamonix would host the Olympics four years later in 1924
Canadians love curling! Here are some enjoying a match at 5th Brigade Headquarters, January 1919. 🥌

Will our U.S. members be watching the "big game" today? Americans also enjoyed their version of football in the First World War to keep soldiers fit & occupied. Pictured is the victorious 89th Division team that beat the 4th Division 14--0 while in the Army of the Occupation in the Rhineland.

The Society for Military History is now archiving historical materials related to military history that are disappearing from federal or state websites. We are open to submissions, anonymously or otherwise. Please see www.smh-hq.org/archivedreso... and note there the submission links.
Un gros MERCI to the French national archives - emailed looking for some guidance on documents that they not only found for me, but digitized and sent by email. Heroes.
I'd almost forgotten I had ever created this. Only came to mind today when someone mentioned it elsewhere. And this is why I give my full support to Canada. #WW1 #FWW #Canada #Ypres www.longlongtrail.co.uk/battlefields...

Scenes from Ontario. Elbows up.
Here's a fact most Americans don't know:
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is the largest purchaser of wine by dollar value in the world.
The LCBO has shut the flow of all American beer, wine, spirits.
We will drink "Freedom wines" from our allies and beer from our communities.
Calico cat lays sideways on a blanket with eyes partially closed as owner pets her head.
I don’t have a lot of positive thoughts or things to say right now, but here is my cat and she has no idea what a tariff is.
Red state alcohol is currently being removed at B.C. Liquor store in Victoria. #bcpoli
We literally fight and defend ourselves and each other side by side, together.
We manufacture and grow and produce things, together.
This tariff war is complete insanity and self-destructive.

New Year’s Morning battlefield walk to Lost Avenue in Gettysburg 🇺🇸
More Gettysburg today, a hike in a less traveled area of the battlefield. Walking the ground like this connects the books and stories to the physical world, and I always leave with a renewed vigor to learn more. Having awesome people to share it with makes it all the better. Happy New Year!
Wrapping up 2024 in the best way possible - battlefielding at Gettysburg. Checking out the newly updated Little Round Top, paying homage to the Minnesota boys and wishing General George Meade a Happy 209th Birthday.
Love that the chief war bore went to see my local war memorial!
City and county workers pass by the names of Ramsey County war dead every day - Memorial Hall in Saint Paul City Hall / Ramsey County Courthouse was dedicated to them, the names are inscribed in marble in this lovely art deco building.
You need to go inside next time you ever make it to the Twin Cities! www.ramseycounty.us/sites/defaul...

Can’t wait for this one to make it to 🇨🇦!
If you haven’t followed the GWG yet on BlueSky, be sure to.
What are the mental gymnastics you play with yourself to be productive?
When I need to start writing a paper, I have to make the document title something super non-threatening. Right now one my term paper drafts is titled "Blank Page."
First time at LAC! The real fun begins!
Today’s full length feature is up. In 1983 a biographer of George V called him a coward for not offering asylum to the Tsar.
Find out how it wasn’t his decision to make, why politically it would have been a terrible idea, and what a devastated King did do for his tragic Russian relatives…
