Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ canceled by CBS, to end in May 2026 CBS said in a statement that it was “purely a financial decision.” The show launched with Colbert as host, executive producer and writer a decade ago.

Breaking news: “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026, CBS said in a statement.

American Pride Slips to New Low Fifty-eight percent of U.S. adults are extremely or very proud to be Americans, the lowest in Gallup's 25-year trend.

Trump loves to play Lee Greenwood's patriotic song with the lyrics "proud to be an American." But on Trump's watch, fewer people are proud to be American than ever recorded. Just 58% describe themselves that way, down from 67% last year, per @gallup.com news.gallup.com/poll/692150/...

Frontispiece of the first (1547) edition of Balthasar Staindl's Künstlichs und nutzlichs Kochbuch held at the Bayrische Staatsbibliothek. The image shows a woodcut of a richly equipped and busy kitchen. The master cook is standing to the left of the large masonry hearth, tasting the contents of a large cookpot stood next to the fire while a cauldron is suspended above it. Two men in the background seem to be addressing him. In the right foreground, another man is cutting meat on a work surface set up atop a wooden trough on trestles. Carcasses and a large sausage are shown suspended on the wall in the background.
Everything about this image - the size, the range of equipment, the exclusively male staff, the amounts of meat on display - signals wealth. This is the kind of kitchen you would expect to find in the house of a rich burgher or landed nobleman. The motif recurs in many German cookbooks of the fifteenth and sixteenth century.

Milk pasta dishes are among my favourites in cold and icky weather. This version from 1547 is quite elaborate, delicious, and easy to do in a modern kitchen.

If a foreign adversary snuck into our Federal budget and cut science research and education the way we’re cutting it ourselves — strategically undermining America’s long-term health, wealth, and security — we would likely consider it an act of war.

What is the quickest way to destroy science?
- Discredit and demean expertise.
- Spread misinformation from official sources.
- Aggressively defund research
- Tie funding to ideological stances
- Threaten scientists with retribution and cultivate fear.
- Eliminate diversity of thought and ideas.

Get up, stand up. A day to be proud at Harvard. Our leadership did the brave thing. I am thrilled they did.

Dr Faust keeps at it. His support for Harvard's decisions is obviously heartfelt. The list of CDC cuts with consequences for a healthier America are worth the read.

Safeguarding Consumers Through Minimum Quality Standards: Milk Inspections and Urban Mortality in the United States, 1880-1910 The late 19th century urban milk supply in the United States was regularly skimmed and diluted with (potentially contaminated) water; dyes, caramel, and salt were added to conceal adulteration; boric acid was added to forestall souring. In an effort to protect consumers, most major American cities adopted minimum quality standards (MQSs) for milk and hired inspectors to enforce them. Using newly transcribed data on 35 cities for the period 1880-1910, we find that the hiring of milk inspectors is, after five years, associated with an 11-14 percent reduction in deaths from diarrheal diseases and typhoid; after 10 years, the hiring of milk inspections is associated with a 18-32 percent reduction in deaths from these diseases. Our estimates provide evidence that, when applied directly to a good the quality of which is difficult to ascertain, well-defined MQSs can improve the health of consumers.

🥛⚕️ Milk Inspections Saved Lives

A new study shows that hiring milk inspectors in US cities (1880–1910) cut deaths from typhoid and diarrhoea by up to 32% - highlighting the power of food safety regulations.
