Student walks into class with an internet capable device, camera, calculator, stopwatch, qr scanner, Emailer etc which they have paid for at no cost to school. Told to hand it in and find school-paid-for (very expensive so scarce) range of devices to perform same vital functions!

Internal assessments often provide an accurate and comprehensive measure of a student’s skills compared to a high-stakes exam. They allow for a variety of assessment methods, align with ongoing learning, and reduce the pressure of performance, which can hinder a true demonstration of understanding.

Of course the reason why kids do better with NCEA internal assessments than with external might be to do with it's a more accurate assessment of what they know than provided by a written exam at the end of the year.
