Mydei flinches, caught entirely off-guard. “What?” “Why didn’t you text me? Or call me?” he asks. Mydei purses his lips. He lowers his head and stares at his hand. Taps his foot against the floor. “I didn’t have much to say,” he says. Which, that isn’t entirely the truth. There were plently of times when he thought of Phainon throughout the week. He thought of messaging Phainon a picture of a dog he saw that reminded him of the other, clothes so bright and so ugly that he’s sure Phainon would like them, restaurants he thinks the other would enjoy if he knew about them. But he’d always talk himself out of messaging—stuck wondering if the other would respond, or even appreciate the text. In hindsight, the hypocrisy of his words is almost embarrassing.
