Around half of all profitable corporations in California pay a state tax bill of just $800.
Meanwhile, working people pay taxes on hard-earned dollars to support quality schools, safe roads, and our safety net.
It's time corporations pay their fair share.

"But Schultz, along with four other lawmakers who attended the private meeting, left with the sense that the governor may be leaving Democrats some room to press alternatives to cuts, particularly in the “gray area” of closing tax loopholes."

“H.R. 1 has put state leaders in a really tough spot. Introducing creative solutions — like ensuring that data can be shared across agencies, & the burden is removed off of the individuals — is a really good way to try to mitigate this harm,” says @msaucedo.bsky.social.

No one should take at face value the Trump Admin's claims it just wants to reduce #Medicaid fraud. Actual goals: (1) punishing politically disfavored states (2) justifying the largest Medicaid cuts in history in H.R. 1 and (3) justifying further Medicaid cuts including capping federal funding. Nishi Nair of @calbudgetcenter.org noted that as affordability pressures rise, “expanding CA's young child tax credit ( #AB1960 ) to support more families with low incomes is vital right now.”
Refundable tax credits pull families out of poverty,” yet about 60% of low-income families are excluded.
Cuts to #Health4All proposed by @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social—both in this year's budget & last year's—are making Medi-Cal unequal, as undocumented immigrants are being cut off from services.
“They’ll be paying more for worse & more precarious coverage,” said our policy director, Diana Douglas.
Large profitable corporations have strategies to avoid paying more than the minimum $800 state tax, costing the state billions in lost revenue each year.
Reining in corporate tax breaks & strengthening California’s revenue base is long overdue.

"California has built a reputation as a bulwark against President Donald Trump’s agenda. But when it comes to the state budget — California’s most powerful tool for change — that resistance fades," writes @chrishoene.bsky.social.

Newsom’s last budget, which will be finalized later this year following negotiations with legislative leaders, will answer that question and determine if the promise of a “California for All” is met through real action or if it’s kicked down the road, to his successor.

“A common sense place to start is by eliminating corporate tax loopholes & ensuring that highly profitable corporations pay their fair share in state taxes,” says our own @hannahorbachmandel.bsky.social.
Adding that California loses out on billions annually because of the "water's edge" provision.
As a California state budget nerd, I can't help but love this! @calbudgetcenter.org
