In our work, we’re fortunate enough to meet many incredible individuals – people who have endured war, violence, abuse and poverty. They are determined to build better lives for themselves and their families, and we are proud to support them on their journey.

By being present and open, we can discover that beneath our different experiences and languages, there is common ground that unites all of us.

Courageous conversations are where we speak from the heart, stand up for our shared values, and listen not just to respond, but to truly build understanding. When we listen deeply with genuine attention and curiosity, we create space for new ideas and perspectives.

We support you in many practical ways. We help you apply for asylum support, including housing and financial assistance. If you’re having problems with your accommodation or payment card, we can report them and help get them resolved.

We must challenge fraudulent behaviour when it occurs without fuelling fear or discrimination — and keep the focus on protecting those most at risk.

When this route is portrayed as widely abused, it misleads the public, reinforces harmful stereotypes and fuels division — making it even harder for already oppressed communities fleeing persecution to come forward and seek protection.

Through our work, we see how difficult this process can be for LGBTQI+ people, many of whom have already faced harsh discrimination because of who they are, and who struggle with feeling safe to disclose their identity.

It is important to say this clearly: asylum claims based on sexual orientation or gender identity are rare, and they’re among the hardest to prove.

People like our client Umbaya, who, after being persecuted by the authorities for taking part in an LGBTQI+ event, had to flee Tanzania, a country where you can face life imprisonment just for loving someone of the same gender.

At Migrant Help, we support people affected by displacement and exploitation, including LGBTQI+ people seeking safety in the UK.
