Our volunteer @kelseylian.bsky.social says it best:

"There are many concerns previously debated, but none of them outweigh the safety of children walking to school."

"If we want less traffic in this area, we need to encourage families to walk to school."

I filled in the survey and so can you! tomorrow is the deadline, so get on that. headlight glare is bad for other drivers of course, but also for pedestrians and cyclists and other non-car travellers. tell them to regulate that shit!

Our council says they support active transportation and want to have safe streets for people outside cars but their (in)actions say otherwise. We elected a mayor and council based on this messaging but it appears we’ve been conned. They have said it themselves, they don’t want to alienate drivers.

The tough decision between doing what the loudest complaining adults want vs. what is best for children and society more broadly. Really tough decision!

"According to transportation studies, about half of the students are expected to be able to walk, bike or bus to the school, while the other half will probably be dropped off by parents."

What do staff think will happen if kids don't feel safe walking or biking? Their parents will drive them. /🧵

"Transportation staff have been grappling with how to provide the safest way for students on foot or on bikes to get to the school, while [...] minimizing the impact of increased traffic on the neighbourhood"

They didn't "grapple" with anything. They took the easy way out. (2/3)

City of North Van slims down plans for wider sidewalks at new school Plans changed after neighbours voice concerns about losing street parking

North Van is choosing more parking over sidewalks for kids to walk to school safely. Shameful. And also completely counterproductive. (1/3) 🧵

It's an unsponsored chance for people to go to a very, very low traffic neighbourhood and ride their bikes. It's a 500m loop in a posh neighbourhood with a wonderful park in the middle. Families and all sorts show up. It's a bit of a quiet, fun protest about taking back our roads, neighbourhoods.

We felt similarly, but we have an in-person meeting with the city team about this next week and hope to have a productive conversation. While this detour might be over relatively soon, there's lots to be improved about cyclist protection during construction detours in general too.

Days since someone on a bike was last hit at 10th and Main: re-set to 0 again.

We have a meeting with the city about this in 6 days. Hopefully we can hold at 5 cyclist crashes (that we know of) between now and then.

The new Pine St bike lane connection between the Arbutus Greenway and Seaside looks pretty good. But it was pretty stunning to see that it was first passed by council in 2018, and construction *might* start next year, after 9 years of consultation.

We rarely talk about fundraising, but we really do think you should pass that gas gift money over to us. We can't bail out driving forever, but we can organize together to make transportation systems that are safe and sustainable for all.

An average driver will save about $5 per fill up from this, roughly $20/month. Why not become a monthly donor to VZV and put it forward for road safety? www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donati...

Steps from my house. Where is the urgency on the part of Vancouver's council majority or its police department to stop such terrible things happening? Perhaps if we called it a 'stranger attack'.

I thought Carney was a builder of infrastructure? With $2.4 billion, we could quickly get to incredible levels of intercity bus service.

Medical appointments, family visits, vacations, etc could all be done without a car.

Instead, the people who can afford a car will save ~$5 per tank.

If they were really making trucks for mountain bikers to shuttle up washed out fire roads the body and hood would be as low as possible while maintaining ground clearance. They would be small and functional like a classic pickup truck. The same changes that would make a truck safer to drive in city.

I live two blocks from the detour on Manitoba a block west of Ontario and I’ve biked by after two accidents at Broadway and Ontario. I just emailed them with this video clip showing 40 vehicles ignoring a no entry sign to rat run up to 10th during a 30 min period last month.

6th there is a horrible road and we should be a) calming it b) looking at cutting access to it from some roads like Oak altogether. No point trying this under the current council of course.
