White snakeroot (Ageratina altissima). We have a ton of this native plant growing out back. I haven't planted any of it. I can only assume that it's coming in from what's in the seed bank that's being cleared of other invasive plants competing for resources.

Shoots of marginal wood fern just starting to emerge from the soil.
Another shot of marginal wood fern (Dryopteris marginalis) just starting to emerge from the soil. This was from almost 2 weeks ago. They're now over a foot tall.

shoots of wild geranium emerging from the soil. Flower buds that aren't yet open are visible on the main shoot.
Wild geranium (Geranium maculatum) is one of the earliest blooming native plants we have on our property. This is from last week, it's in full bloom now.

A tripod lying flat on the ground with a Canon R6 and Sigma 150-600mm lens pointing toward a barely visible sprout in the distance
Compass plant (Silphium laciniatum) sprouts, along with a shot showing "what I see" with the camera setup. The little red box in the distance is the sprout that I'm shooting. Compass plants can survive for up to 100 years under the right conditions, this is year 2 for these ones. 🙂

Marginal wood fern (Dryopteris marginalis) shoots emerging from the soil. These little guys are only about 2-3" tall at this point. I love it when native plants start emerging in spring.

Signs of spring as native plants start emerging from the soil.
It's been a long winter.

I remember watching this on B&W tv as a kid. Scared the bejesus out of me.
Several more images from the other day spent at a local conservatory, shooting in infrared. I love the dreamy, abstract look IR gives with these types of images.

Canon Digital Rebel (aka 300D) with a 135mm f/2 L lens. I got it converted for IR in 2009. I'm thinking of getting my 7D converted, so I'm brushing up on IR.
I went out yesterday to a local conservatory to shoot some infrared images. I haven't shot any IR in over 10 years, so it took me a while to get back into the groove of pre-visualizing what the camera "sees".
I'm happy with the results. :)
Not bad for a 22 year old camera with all of 6 megapixels.
Just in time for Cyber Monday, go check out my 2026 calendar of night photography around the Midwest. Mostly shots of the Milky Way, with some star trails and Aurora Borealis thrown in for good measure.

This is a bittersweet photo. This was Peanut’s orthopedic bed. It got him through the last couple of years of his life before we lost him 5 months ago at the ripe old age of 17.
Gizmo finally feels like he can make it his own. Somewhere Peanut is looking on with his goofy smile.

A stack of 3 books: “Photographing the Night Sky”, “Creative Nightscapes and Time-Lapses” and “The Deep-Sky Imaging Primer”.
I’m sensing a pattern in my winter reading list…

I regret not going out 2 nights ago to shoot the aurora. Last night despite challenging conditions I managed to catch it with a time lapse in Brown Co St Park south of Indianapolis. Still trying to figure out a glitch with my intervalometer, but I'm still pleased with this.

Bold strategy.

I took advantage of clear weather a couple of nights ago to photograph Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon). I could have used a longer lens to highlight the comet, but I prefer to show it in context of the surrounding landscape. Cold, windy, and the windmills were spinning.

👋🏼
I blame early morning with no coffee. This was probably close to 120° field of view, not 180. 🙄
WTF is Ozzy doing in that group? He was one of the good guys.
Thanks! Looking at it this morning, I tend to agree that it looks a bit stretched vertically. This was w a 20 mm lens in portrait mode, so it’s already a wide angle vertically. It’s probably close to a 180° field of view.
Oh it’s definitely not a comet. Probably just a street light from a ranger station.
Not sure how this is going to post on Bsky, but here we go.
The Milky Way really put on a show a couple of nights ago at Brown Co St Park, IN. Not bad for a Bortle 4 area.

Looks quite judgmental. Is the bird feeder empty?
A free bag of popcorn AND a coupon for getting vaccinated? Holy shit. What a great deal. Woohoo!

This is my first astro time lapse video, and it was a holy grail time lapse to boot. The 2nd night I camped at Garden of the Gods in Shawnee Nat Forest the weather was perfect. 3 hours, 1 photo every 20 sec.

They're practicing body drops before "someone" falls from the window to their death.
I spent 3 nights camping in SE Illinois last week, looking to photograph the Milky Way. This was the first night, from a spot where I had photographed before.

The sunset last night at Garden of the Gods in Shawnee National Forest in IL did not disappoint. You can just see the waxing crescent moon getting ready to set.
