Shrubs are great additions to your pollinator garden. They offer nesting sites for birds as well as provide nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and insects that birds need to feed their young.

Proceeds support local nonprofits.

We'll pause from our Trillium series to feature some blooming trees. Chionanthus virginicus is blooming now. Known by common names like fringetree, grancy greybeard or even old man’s beard, this member of the olive family is found throughout the state. (1/2) #nativeplants

A wide shot of a young eucalyptus sapling with striking silver blue leaves growing from a weathered tree stump. The plant is the central focus, surrounded by a dry Australian bush land setting with tall, slender gum trees and parched earth in the background.

The lighting is soft and natural, highlighting the cool tones of the new growth against the warm, earthy browns of the forest floor.

a flowering stalk of nashville breadroot with over a dozen blooming flowers. the short stem is reddish purple and densely covered in long hairs below the flowers, present but less densely above the lowest flowers. several flowers grow at shared nodes, the nodes rotating around going up the stem. the legume-type flowers are light purple, but their hairy calyces are the same color as the stem. the banner petal is not quite double the length of the wing petals and tends to reflex backwards. the wings are held forwards with edges that curve inwards, around and usually concealing the keel petals unless you look at just the right angle.

some blooming nashville breadroot seen from above. early in their development, the clusters of flowers are egg-shaped, but they loosen up and spread apart as the flowers develop. the flowers on each cluster are of the same color, but the colors between the clusters range from light blue to dark purple. the legume-type flowers have long, narrow banners and wings that clasp together around the keels, which grow facing all directions around their shared stalk. the leaves grow on their own hairy stems, one leaf per stem. the leaves are circular, with usually 5 to 7 elliptic, hairy green leaflets spreading in all directions around a central point. the plants grow in loose gravel on a limestone cedar glade.

PS I should put in a plug for Wild Ones Front Range. We support folks in gardening with #nativeplants. This is a good year to dip your toe in if you haven’t yet. If not for the bees, butterflies, and birds, then for the water!

About a year later. Pretty native flowers, but warning that the lesser celandine and Japanese knotweed of it all may be dispiriting.

This is such an opportunity to get people to CHANGE. Instead of lawn, why not low water #nativeplants, especially in front yards? Instead of thirsty landscaping which does nothing, how about a resilient native shade tree/s? How about one that bears fruit?

I've been thinking about trying to grow eastern prickly pear lately. I don't have the sandy soil for it, so I'm still trying to figure out just exactly how I'm going to do that.

Golden ragwort. In my experience, this is a super easy native to establish. These were volunteers from my yard that I moved last fall to a woodland being cleared of honeysuckle. Glad they survived the winter. #nativeplants

Lovely lavender flowers of one of the #nativeplants in the backyard - a Chaparral mallow. The shrub has soft gray green leaves that are covered in very tiny hairs. The bees like those cup shaped flowers. 🌿 Southern California

The local Little Barley is already going to seed, I love this species. Is anyone else here familiar with them or familiar with growing/processing them? They were domesticated once by eastern indigenous nations to my knowledge. #nativeplants #nativegrains #botany #littlebarley #alabama

An Oak Tree a Day
Sometimes an oak just jumps out like it wants to be noticed. It also helps that many suppress the plants around it by shade, water & nutrient consumption, duff layer or a lesser form of chemical interference (allelopathy). California #nativePlants #nature

Closeup of small green plants including natives and discards like the yellow daylilies from my original tear planting to see if anything would grow in the cracks. With annual Tithonia in the mix last year, the amount of #bees, #wasps, & #butterflies that visited just this area is exceptional.

The greening continues behind the bin and along the garage apron with flowering plants to fill in and some more ideas planned to add this season. Plus some heavy concrete bricks to prevent the garbage men from pushing the cart back over the plants, though they’re usually pretty respectful of them once they’re up. Who doesn’t appreciate a bit of surprise beauty in their everyday workplace?

Alley Patch is waking up. Our tiny #UrbsInHorto #Chicago garden means we can’t waste an inch of #pollinators habitat. So garbage bins are surrounded by #NativePlants Pycnanthemum muticum & tenuifolium, Oligoneuron rigidum, Grindelia lanceolata, maybe Asclepias plus some other stowaways. #gardening 🌱
