He should have known when he found Jayce in the kitchen, staring at a pan with two uncooked eggs, unable to remember how to light the stove. The yolks had stared at Viktor then, like the eyes of the automatons lining their walls. He should have realized when he first caught Jayce’s lips moving in a silent conversation, or when he noticed the way Jayce tilted his head to hear sounds that weren’t there, but he had been afraid, hadn’t wanted to shatter the fragile beginnings of whatever their life was becoming after nearly ending the world.
