Today would have been my mom's birthday. I wrote a little bit about how I'm still processing grief as I embark on my final year of graduate school. It's a bittersweet time for me, but I'm trying to focus on the good memories and what my future holds.

Just spoke to The Hill about how the dismantling of the NIH is impacting science in America. We still face a cliff of unfathomable heights, w easily 1000+ labs poised to close in the next year due to funding ending. A generation of young scientists lost because there is nowhere for them to train.
We have some bandwidth and so Iβm interested in expanding the nbr of ME/CFS patients whose genomes we analyze. If you have data and would be interested in signing up to our protocol (we have found interesting findings in some, but not all people) please reach out and I can explain. #ME/CFS #Genomics
New paper from our team: we used an n-of-1 #PrecisionMedicine framework in a small #ME/CFS cohort and found rare, large-effect pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in ~1/3 of participants #Genomics link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Competition over collaboration.
That mindset slows science.
Makes labs toxic.
And crushes the curious before they get a chance.
I think that when I finish my PhD, I need to spend a year doing absolutely nothing. I need time to heal & breathe. I also don't think I can stay in academia. I think the best route is for me to work for myself. The world is just increasingly more hostile. Not sure how people continue this path.
Today is the 3rd anniversary of my mother's passing, and I'm still wrestling with grief. I have more good days than bad ones, but I'm still in disbelief that I lost the person who loved me the most in this world.

NSF Grant Termination Information Collection Form Please use this form to submit information identifying specific NSF grants that have been cancelled for any reason after January 20, 2025. We are tracking these grants to increase transparency, organize affected PIs, and facilitate responses, including via litigation. Please share the form as widely as possible with your networks. We are actively building a pipeline to organize these terminations and will soon have a tracker akin to our NIH grant tracker at https://airtable.com/appjhyo9NTvJLocRy/shrNto1NNp9eJlgpA WE WILL NOT DISCLOSE THE IDENTITY OF ANYONE WHO USES THIS FORM TO PROVIDE INFORMATION. We will keep your identity confidential. These resources are maintained by Noam Ross of rOpenSci and Scott Delaney of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, with input and support from additional volunteers. For any questions, please contact Scott Delaney on Signal (sdelaney.84). THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!
π¨Report your NSF grant terminations! π¨
We are starting to collect information on NSF grant terminations to create a shared resource as we have for NIH. The more information we collect, the more we can organize, advocate, and fight back! Please share widely!

Most centrally, the WHI generated irreplaceable knowledge on effects of hormone replacement on heart disease, cancers, bone health, etc.
But it also provided a resource for some of the most important methods development in modern biostatistics & epidemiology. E.g. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18854702/
