For anyone working on #structuralbiology of #metalloproteins: the new DNP-enabled IMAGINE-X has the potential to be absolutely transformative! Check it out!

Imagine beamline at ORNL - in process of upgrade
Calgary Cal @iucr2026.bsky.social mascot and I visited Oak Ridge National Laboratory over the last few days!
We are all super excited about the upgrades at the IMAGINE beamline. π at those new detectors! Next up: the DNP (Dynamic Nuclear Polarization) instrument will be installed.
The current leniency period previously communicated in NOT-OD-26-033 will end on May 7, 2026. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Good luck! It is fun!!
There needs to be a giant billboard in every major American city that touts this. In any other era except this suicidal science administration, this would be a miraculous, wondrous thing.
Congrats!!
Screenshot of Science commentary articleL Scientists stunned by βfundamentally new wayβ life produces DNA. Newly discovered bacterial defense system challenges genetic codeβs central dogma. Image: In a newly discovered bacterial defense system, paired strands of DNA (orange and cyan) are synthesized by two enzymes: One (yellow) uses an RNA template (beige) to guide the assembly of the nucleotide bases that make up DNA, while a second, highly unusual enzyme (light blue) uses its own amino acids as a template."
As a scientist, I am here to report that this headline is indeed accurate as I am in fact STUNNED!!
Wow. This is incredible. π§ͺ

Senior professors - if you want to help your junior colleagues in these times, I am begging you, review our papers. I have done 25 manuscript reviews in the last 6 years. But my own manuscript is stalled out waiting for reviewers. Relatedly, I won't be doing any more reviews until tenure. π§ͺ
Love starting a week with an acceptance notice for a paper! π
Stay tuned!

First off, let me highlight recent work from Vincent et al.: the authors modified plant ferredoxin with cyanophenylalanine and succeeded in measuring FeS-redox-dependent nitrile band shifts in the IR spectra.
Now would be a great time to reconsider that 46% cut to NASAβs science budget for FY2027.
A black and white photo of Katherine Johnson, the "Hidden Figure" that sent man into space
A photo of Vanessa Wyche, director of the Johnson Space Center and NASA's highest ranking civil service member
Let it be known that Katherine Johnson was the reason for the first astronauts in space.
And now Vanessa Wyche, head of the Johnson Space Center and NASA's highest ranking civil servant, is the responsible for the longest manned space flight in history
I'm going to have to get my butt in gear if I want to get one last publication out before retirement

SUNY Chancellor John B. King @sunychancellor.bsky.social announces SUNY's "absolute & unwavering commitment" to DEI: "Some are cowering & backing away. We cannot and will not. We will not retreat, we will not back down... DEI is in our DNA." Super grateful & proud to teach @ SUNY!
#chemsky, give me a hand sharing this, if you can.
Wildlife trade drives animal-to-human pathogen transmission over 40 years
New in @science.org βΌοΈ In the most comprehensive study to date, we show that wildlife trade is driving animal-to-human zoonotic spillover at a planetary scale, with +1 spillover per host every 10 years. Live animal markets and illegal trade pose even greater risks. π www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Just woke up, glad we didn't wipe out a country last night, pissed that it was suggested that we would and about how many people died in this pointless "excursion". Hope that Congress takes the hint from the calls yesterday (y'all called, right?) to make a change today. I'm so fricking tired
I am honored to be nominated for ASCB Council this year. If you are an ASCB member, please share and vote before April 30th!
The amazing @rogerslabucd.bsky.social is also on the ballot!
The National Association of Black Bookstores has declared today β Tuesday, April 7 __ National Black Bookstore Day in honor of the more than 300 Black-owned bookstores operating in the U.S.
A positive uplifting video to start the day, discussing the benefits and the stakes.

It pains me to to say so, but it's difficult for me to disagree with this point below.
The President's fiscal year 2027 Budget was released today.
Important---Important---Important
The President's Budget is always fundamentally a political document that Congress may or may not (usually not) take very seriously.

Today is the anniversary of the April 1 RIFs at NIH and HHS.
Thinking of my colleagues who lost their jobs last year.
These cuts did no improve efficiency. They undermined the functioning of our government.
Just a reminder that 1yr ago today many dedicated NIH employees received RIF notices and started the process where many others were told they must leave their positions/ICs after years of service.
The pain felt across the scientific community in the last year is also felt by those serving it.
