Shocking statistic ⬇️

The hallmark of a generation increasingly unable to achieve the milestones previous generations took for granted..

Its is an issue we discussed in our latest UK Poverty report, one which clearly intersects with low-incomes and lack of opportunity.

The Origin of the Research University Universities have existed for more than a thousand years — and for almost all of that time, they weren’t centers of research. What changed in 19th century Germany?

A three way fight between medievalist conservatives, bureaucratic enlightenment modernisers, and Romantic idealists results in a compromise no one quite wanted but also is drives a huge portion of innovation and technical advance in the modern world. Fascinating!

‘I feel like I’m losing her’: the families torn apart by older relatives going far right It starts with a ‘back in my day’ nostalgic meme – then suddenly your elders are sharing AI-generated ‘boomerslop’ and repeating conspiracy theories …

Fascinating.

Why higher pay hasn’t made young adults feel richer The aspiration gap has turned everyone into losers, especially graduates

Great piece (and graphics) by @jburnmurdoch.ft.com. PS This is exactly why @pauldwebb.bsky.social and I talked about 'the educated left-behind' when we wrote about the young people who'd followed Corbyn into the Labour Party - and who may well be following Zack Polanski into the Greens.

Why, if you believe, like I do, that grassroots party members are ultimately the lifeblood of liberal democracy, you have to admire them for making the effort, whichever part of the political spectrum they come from.

Orbán’s Ouster Doesn’t Prove His Critics Wrong Many dictatorships have ended peacefully, so the end of Orbán’s rule in Hungary isn’t proof he was never really taking the country in an authoritarian direction, writes James Kirchick.

Polish communism was also defeated, in the end, by an election.

Weekend Update #180: The Ukrainians Stop Pretending Costs And Balances In Russian Oil; The Russian Spring Offensive After 3 Weeks

Hi All, Just sent out my free weekend update. The big story this week was the Ukrainians speaking truthfully about the USA not being their (or Europe's) friend. In war seeing reality as opposed to what you desperately want to see, is a fundamental test. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

If you take into consideration V-Dem's confidence intervals, Sweden and the US had the same quality of democracy for most of the last 36 years, with the exception of the early 2000s and the Trump era.

Constitutional lawyer here. I don't think it would violate the Constitution for the VP/Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, but the intended constitutional remedy for this behavior is impeachment & removal. The fact that that remedy is politically impossible is a scandal and a crisis.

An added wrinkle to this pattern of mass disassociation is that the President is permanently disassociated...he can say "Mamdani is a terrorist who must deported" one day and then the next day have a chummy photo op with him in the White House. His words & his actions are totally unlinked.
