Happy #PhycologyFriday! Today also happens to be the last day of finals here at Kutztown. I have a bit more grading to do but I think I can safely say that I survived my first semester as an assistant professor!

Thank you for sharing! I just discussed fisheries in my Marine Ecology class yesterday, and of course had to mention the classic textbook example of the cod collapse in 1992. Sending this article out to my students to discuss!

Tough choice, I find them all so interesting! For today I'll say Codium fragile, also known as oyster thief or dead man's fingers. I'm holding a big clump of it in my photo!

True, many algae species can grow into different shapes depending on the environmental conditions! Sharing to see if we can another opinion here...

Any other algae folks want to weigh in here? The spherical growth is pretty distinctive, but I can't say I've seen this one before. #phycologyfriday ๐Ÿฆ‘

Interesting! There are quite a few different brown algae species in the North Atlantic, aside from the charismatic kelps. I don't recognize this one immediately, but the fluffy spherical morphology is very cool. Maybe a Desmarestia species?

Can I join? Not currently working in kelp, but it's still my home turf!

I completed my dissertation at the University of New Hampshire in 2023, where I focused on the invasive red algae Dasysiphonia japonica.
