Yesterday (despite the miserable weather!) we installed a LICOR evapotranspiration sensor and a new anemometer on our eddy covariance system monitoring a young Sitka spruce stand. The data will allow us to compare the sensors in preparation for future forest research projects. 🌳🧪

Our EXPLORATION project aims to generate a clearer understanding of how mixed‑species stands in newly established forests respond to drought 🌳

In November, stakeholders helped shape the next phase of this project in a workshop hosted by @drgeorgexenakis.bsky.social 🤝

Only nine conifer species make up almost all UK commercial forests. Sitka spruce accounts for over half of all timber harvested.

To boost resilience to climate change, Forest Research and partners (Forestry and Land Scotland & Forestry England) planted 17 emerging species over 9 large trial sites.

In general I think it's hard to combat scientific misinformation when some of the best research is locked behind an academic paywall, while lots of nonsense gets published free for everyone to read in predatory journals.

Pure bloodlines? Ancestral homelands? DNA science says no. — Harvard Gazette Geneticist explains recent analyses made possible by tech advances show human history to be one of mixing, movement, displacement.

“The big perspective change from ancient DNA study is that people living today are almost never the descendants of the people in the same place thousands of years before”

Water usage of old-growth oak at elevated CO2 in the FACE (Free-Air CO2 Enrichment) of climate change Abstract. Predicting how increased atmospheric CO2 levels will affect water usage by whole, mature trees remains a challenge. The present study investigates diurnal (i.e. daylight) water usage of oaks...

New results from the #BIFoR #FACE experiment. Old-growth oak trees show signs of reduced water usage under elevated CO2, but also strong interannual variability, whilst "ghost" trees use less water than those in other treatments. Full details here: doi.org/10.5194/bg-2...
