Happy earth day from my yard. I assume these are invasive snails but they are kind of cute.

Two things are true on Earth Day 2026:
1. We have a long way to go, especially on carbon emissions.
2. The progress since the first Earth Day in 1970 is staggering: U.S. air pollution down 60-95% through policy, innovation, and action.

Pessimism isn’t more honest than optimism. Both are choices.

Kudos to this journalist. This is *exactly* how you question them – if they don't answer the question, or deflect it, or answer another question, or verbally attack you – you interrupt them and ask it again.

⛽And amid the US-Israel strikes on Iran, conspiratorial discourse rose about widespread usage of E15 in North America to fight inflated gas prices, some TikTok users going as far as claiming it was a scheme to force people to adopt electric cars! We clarified it here: u.afp.com/itscorn

What are the facts? Scientists told AFP that despite the presence of trees from the pre-industrial age, the Arctic shows clear signs of climate change accelerated by the burning of fossil fuels.

What are the facts? Scientists told AFP that despite the presence of trees from the pre-industrial age, the Arctic shows clear signs of climate change accelerated by the burning of fossil fuels.

⛰️The Arctic is warming 4x faster than the rest of the globe. The presence of ancient vegetation and warmer past times in Earth's history do not disprove this, scientists told AFP.

What's being shared? Skeptics claimed the age of ancient trees found under receding glaciers in Alaska prove humans are not responsible for climate change because they are evidence of warmer times at the poles.

🧊Posts in climate-skeptic Facebook groups this month also misused genuine research on ancient forests in an attempt to disprove the scale of warming caused by human emissions. Read more: u.afp.com/ancientforests

What are the facts? Investigations found the Nebraska fires were primarily sparked by failed electrical infrastructure. The blazes were fuelled by extended hot and dry weather patterns and dry-lightning storms.

What are the facts? Investigations found the Nebraska fires were primarily sparked by failed electrical infrastructure. The blazes were fuelled by extended hot and dry weather patterns and dry-lightning storms.

🌳Sadly, there's no substance to this theory. The blazes fit into a very high start of the US wildfire season: 200% that of the last ten year-average. Read our story: u.afp.com/Nebraskafires

Users claimed historic Nebraska wildfires were intentionally set to make room for new data centres near a key US water source.

📛The record wildfires that ravaged Nebraska in March pushed people to believe that the blazes were intentionally set to make room for data centers. "Land grab" theories commonly surface online after major weather events!

My hot take on this is that it will only drive a renaissance for authenticity if people are willing and unafraid to be authentic.

🟢 The energy shock is now going global

This is the part many people still underestimate.

Economist Steve Hanke warned the conflict has restricted the free flow of critical goods from the Gulf — including helium and fertiliser.

Energy analyst Ketan Joshi suggested fuel rationing and work-from-home rules could become enforced measures as governments urgently try to reduce reliance on complex global fossil fuel supply chains.

Multiple countries showed signs of the spreading impact:

Sri Lanka ordered street lights, neon signs and billboard lighting switched off to cut energy consumption by 25%.

It is very fun to get google alert hits for my own name now that reveal completely fabricated statements / quotes thanks to reliance on chatbots. Absolutely wild how the choking pollution of our information environment is being powered by literal choking pollution from fossil fuelled data centres

I think a lot of people don't like the idea of having to navigate normal stuff like worrying about texting a friend too much, making plans, the cost of therapy, and being held accountable by friends and mentors for bad decisions. But community takes effort, and these tensions are often worth it.

People are asking ChatGPT things I would normally just ask a friend, parent, mentor, therapist or medical professional for or about. It takes work to build and maintain those relationships, and figure out who is the right person to ask, but the alternative is a digital tool known for lying to users.

A drawing on brown paper that says Happy Tax Day! First drawing shows a binturong labeled "Bintu-right" on March 8th at 9 AM sitting dutifully at his adding machine doing complex calculations with a thought bubble saying "Carry the one..." Below it is a second binturong labeled "Bintu-wrong" at 12 AM on April 15th folding his tax form into a paper airplane and flying it. Honestly, I relate more to him right now because fuck taxes.

“Staggering” Water Loss Driven by Groundwater Mining Poses Global Threat A new study finds that freshwater resources are rapidly disappearing, creating arid “mega” regions and causing sea levels to rise.

'Earth is being slowly dehydrated by the unmitigated mining of #groundwater, which underlies vast proportions of every continent.'
