I have an undergrad doing a entrepreneurial competition and her company is trying to revolutionize surfboard maintenance. If you’re a #surfer please fill out Abbey’s survey. Please share!

ok, I tried to make a starter pack on genome stability/DNA replication/DNA repair etc. Sorry if I couldn't find someone, please nominate yourself and your colleagues in comments or DMs, looking forward to connecting with everyone!

What’s your favorite use of the lac operon or the yeast Gal promoter system?

Would love to include some hot takes in a lecture tomorrow 😉

Yesterday I learned a former undergrad submitted his thesis work to Nature and a first author publication (I actually got teary when he told me). He’s one of my best ever— great scientist, great person and no matter what happens I am so thrilled for him.

It seems academic science Twitter has moved to Bluesky, Hi!!!

I’m a new assistant professor at Endicott college and love working with undergraduates, yeast genetic assays and DNA repair and replication.

Something I’ll always be impressed by: undergraduates have such a unique ability to use SO MANY words and yet still say absolutely nothing in their papers.

What people who don’t get migraines also don’t realize is that the medicine is so wildly variable in efficacy for people. I think I tried like 5 and only 1 worked for me.

Everyone is an armchair expert. When I was getting hormonal migraines I had so many people give baseless advice. When I figured out the culprit (my BC) it was hard to convince people including my doctors.

I also learned that if people can’t see why you’re in pain, then it obviously can’t be real. 🙄

In recommendation letter upload portals doesn’t everyone just rank their students as exceptional/top 5% etc? I feel like this is not a useful metric.

Ps. If you can’t rank a student highly, don’t be a jerk, just don’t write them a letter and tell them why.

Y’all, this job took me 5+ hours to apply to and required me to ask my thesis advisor to submit a rec while she was on pediatric on call service.

BE honest about what you want. I would have told you why I could teach the other. You asked which I could teach BEST right now.

Academic hiring, get your shit together. No lie, I just had this discussion with a search committee,

them: we want someone to teach one of your biochem classes, either one, you tell us!

Me: I can teach this one really amazing b/c I already do!

Them: …but we only care about the other one!

Making time for yourself to do non science things has helped me immensely. Reminding myself that I am one person.

Kiddo hot takes as I fill out school paperwork:

T: Are you filling out the stuff from my folder?
M: Yes.
T: Are you good at filling out papers?
M: Yes.
T: Is that because you’re a scientist and have lots of papers to fill out?
💀
