And I should say that one reason I absolutely loved AM’s early stuff is because their name is so terrible (I’m guessing it was a riff on The Stone Roses, but in an embarrassingly lame way) - I couldn’t bring myself to talk to anyone about them for months whilst I got increasingly obsessed with them…
I drove from London to Manchester and back to see AM the Sunday before they released Dancefloor (and taught my class the next day) 😎 And, no, nothing has come close to their debut.
Stereophonics weren’t on my radar in The Days Before Streaming - really must give their catalogue a listen 🤔
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - WPSIA, TWIN
As I now know - My Friday Five this week has a couple of very long album titles, so I had to abbreviate something 😳
WPSIA, TWIN is a star witness in the tremendous ‘Artists Have either one great album or a career’s worth of the same pretty good thing in them’ pub conversation gambit 😎
#FridayFive Album opening tracks
1. At The Bottom of Everything. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. Bright Eyes.
2. All I Want. Blue. Joni Mitchell.
3. Moving. The Kick Inside. Kate Bush.
4. Around The World In a Day. Prince & the Revolution
5. The View from the Afternoon. WPSIA,TWIN. Arctic Monkeys.
Lump in the throat EVERY TIME
Number 1 is an absolute belter 😎
And for a bonus track to which you can dance yourself dizzy all the way back to the Tyne, Dance To Your Daddy by Nancy Kerr & James Fagan.
#FridayFive has an accent
1. Seventeen Going Under. Sam Fender.
2. Decent Days and Nights. The Futureheads.
3. The Night I Lost My Head. Maximo Park.
4. What Have We Got? Sting & Jimmy Nail.
5. The Testimony of Patience Kershaw. The Unthanks.

SEND reforms are on the way, but are they the right reforms?
@samfr.bsky.social and @mrjlauder.bsky.social join me to discuss the Government's proposals for changing how children and young people with special needs are supported.

In my latest podcast, @missmc.bsky.social said the Schools White Paper would have been better off replacing many of its 'one line policies' with more substantive plans for change.

As ‘Low Expectations’ are in the air again, here’s a polemic I wrote about origins of ‘the soft bigotry of low expectations’ soundbite a decade ago.
Whilst some things have changed, I’d still argue that ‘low expectations’ is unhelpful sleight of hand…

I've been appointed a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences - which is quite cool given I'm not a social scientist. Hoping for physics next.

Just shows how much contempt Reform has for their own supporters. This is a policy that helps the kids of the wealthy educated liberal elites they claim to despise. And would harm the types of constituency they do well in.
We're really excited to announce that @insighthq.bsky.social @jpembroke.bsky.social @richardselfridge.bsky.social will be running their 'Databusting Surrey with the Educakers' event with us in June.
Have a look at the link below for more information.
We'd love to meet so many of you in person!
