How thrilling that the Department of Climate Change is the one in charge of new coal mine approvals.
Maybe someone should point out to the minister that the portfolio is notionally about mitigating climate change rather than helping it along?
Congratulations!
Antarctic ice sheet folk, I'm looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Antarctic Ice Sheet Reconstruction [readvertised] for a 3.5yr appointment in Tasmania. Very flexible start date!
Join our new team, figuring out what is happening and what may happen in East Antarctica. 1/4

word of warning: I VERY much doubt the website works on mobile phones(!) and if it does, that is purely accidental aha
And I made a little web app where you can go and download monthly precipitation time series data from your location of choice (as long as it's in Australia) wateriso-aus.shinyapps.io/apic/
also a very basic summer insolation at 65N/S. I honestly don't know why I don't have all this.
IPCC AR4 WG1 Chapter 6 Figure 6.13. There is an equivalent at IPCC AR6 WG1 Chapter 2 Figure 2.10 but only from 1750.
and another one: has anyone here gone through the arduous process (e.g., for teaching graphics) of converting the various past1000 forcings (volcanic, solar, GHG) to radiative forcings in W/m2?
This seems like....a big job. And surely someone here has the code for it(!) Hence my attempt at laziness
But also thanks for the heads-up about the CESM2 past1000!! Embarrassingly, I didn't know about that (although tbf Australia is generally a few years behind the loop).
anyway I've emailed the author so maybe they will solve the mystery
After a full Sunday of fruitless searching I am inclined to agree with you. But my hunt was sparked by this paper agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... (and another two that mention the MPI-ESM1-2-LR past2k expt - for which I *did* find a couple of orphaned centuries)
Also I found about two centuries from MPI-ESM1-2-LR (the 'past2k' expt) but no idea what's happened to the rest of it.
Thanks! I've got past1000 & historical for EC-Earth3-Veg-LR, INM-CM4-8, MIROC-ES2L, MRI-ESM2-0, and ACCESS-ESM1-5.
I have past1000 for EC-Earth3-LR but couldn't find the historical (and also the ACCESS-ESM1-5 hist doesn't match its past1000 -_- ).
And yes this is something I'd previously have used twitter for but LinkedIn and Bluesky are all we've got now so here we are
Has anyone here used the PMIP4 past1000 submissions from IPSL-CM6A-LR or MPI-ESM1-2-LR? And more importantly: could point me to where I could find them?! I only recently learned that they exist but can't find them.
At this stage I'm only after tas (past1000 and the associated historical sim)
tyty
Congrats!!
A sad and lovely piece co-authored by my UNSW colleague Rob Brooks on the recent passing of marine scientist and research leader Prof Emma Johnston AO.

I won this sweet prize for being the biggest nerd at an enormous meeting of nerds
@linkedearth.bsky.social #AGU25
It's been a fantastic #AGU25 week for Hydroclimate2k - lots of new H2k friends made at the poster session, SO many amazing Common Era hydroclimate talks, and an H2k lunch so fun that I forgot to take a photo.
A great reminder of what a wonderful global community we have :)

#AGU25 folks, there is a rapid- response town hall TODAY on the #NCAR dismantling at 1 pm, La Nouvelle Orleans ballroom C (per an AGU media advisory)
Typically, I forgot to ask someone to take a photo of my #AGU25 talk. But I liked the part where people giggled instead of hurling fruit every time I (mostly accidentally) threw shade on various parts of the community.
At #AGU25? Come by my poster this afternoon to chat about our in-development @pages-ipo.bsky.social database or indeed any of my absurd number of current projects
*days 2-5 is what i meant, obvs 😅
Can days 1-4 of #AGU25 exceed the lofty heights of day 1, which featured a full day of fun presentations but most importantly this incredible exhibition hall prize?? Immediately my new map projection of choice
The snowgum (Eucalyptus pauciflora) is one of the (relatively) few Australian tree species with clear annual rings.
Researchers at Adelaide Uni and ANU are using snowgum cellulose d18O to produce a new record of alpine hydroclimate over past centuries #21daysof2k @pages-ipo.bsky.social
Interested in tropical (paleo)hydroclimate dynamics, water isotopes, and data-model comparison? Going to #AGU25? My supervisor, Alyssa Atwood, is giving an invited talk on our research into the 8.2 ka Event on Thurs., 18 Dec. between 11:40-11:50 CT! 🌊🪨🧪👩🏻💻

Community discussions like this are the foundation of @pages-ipo.bsky.social projects - helping shape the direction of the paleo community's collaborative research
Did you know the current Hydroclimate2k project isn't the first time PAGES 2k has dipped a toe into understanding global hydroclimate? In 2016, researchers gathered in Palisades, USA to discuss data-model comparisons of Common Era hydroclimate. Read about it here: pages2kpmip3.github.io #21daysof2k
Have you been following @profmattjones.bsky.social and @raindrop-herder.bsky.social who are sharing insights into the work of the PAGES 2k Network working group?
Drop them a follow to see what else they have in store during the #21daysof2k!

Some of the beautiful varves from Nar Gölü, Türkiye. Each pair of layers represents one year of lake sediment. The varves tell us about hydroclimate e.g. where they change colour, as do the proxies we measure from them e.g. Dean et al 2015 QSR 124:162
