Great job, @jakkerman.bsky.social! Want to learn more about conditions when economies successfully recover after #climate-induced #shocks , thrive or permanently decline? Stay tuned, we hope to share the paper soon. #ClimateRisk, #EconSky 🌍 @tudclimateaction.bsky.social #NWO #VIDI

Today I presented at the #SRA-E Benelux meeting on #transformational impacts of large environmental shocks on #regional #economies. Thank you for the nice questions, comments, and the inspiring sessions!

✍️I visited British Steel last week - just as workers were discovering that the plant's Chinese owners were effectively planning to starve the blast furnaces to death.
It was a strange, unsettling experience. With deep ramifications. Some thoughts: edconway.substack.com/p/the-strang...
3 SC3 members (@jakkerman.bsky.social, @ignasicortes.bsky.social, @chatzivasileiadis.bsky.social) presented their work on #economic #climate #adaptation to a room of fellow NL-based environmental economists at the DEARE Day 2025 in Wageningen. A great opportunity to receive feedback on our work!
Our team is expanding! Shane, Merel and Mikhail joined SC3 in the last couple of months and all work on topics related to #climate #adaptation. Meet them in this thread 👇
Fresh off the printing press, @sof14g1l.bsky.social, @thorid.bsky.social, @jakkerman.bsky.social and @tatianafilatova.bsky.social investigate barriers and drivers of #Climate adaptation through a literature review using #NLP algorithms, as part of our VIDI project on social tipping points. Congrats!
Check out our new publication, with @sof14g1l.bsky.social @thorid.bsky.social and @tatianafilatova.bsky.social (@sc3team.bsky.social)!
I live near this neighborhood! They also very nicely integrated the old industrial architecture and turned them into restaurants and coffee places!
What.
Last Sunday Mario Draghi delivered a forceful speech, arguing that Europe has fallen into a vicious cycle of weak domestic demand, insufficient macroeconomic stimulus, depressed investment and low productivity growth cepr.org/system/files....
Here's a 🧵 on recent research related to this view.
@jakkerman.bsky.social is a PhD candidate researching the economic and financial dynamics arising from increasing climate hazards. He examines how societies adapt to these risks and investigates the endogenous processes that can lead to nonlinear outcomes, such as lock-ins and tipping points.
It’s time to introduce the Center for Social Complexity of Climate Change (SC3 www.sc3.center). We work on climate change and how different agents interact in this context. Follow us to learn about the relationship between #ClimateChange and #Society and #Economy. This is the team ⬇️

problems that Fields medalists can occasionally handle *(in special cases) are perhaps not the best as-if models of agents' dynamic behavior
Rich countries don't want to repay low-income countries for adaptation.
But remember that climate impacts for the average citizen of a low-income country at 1.5°C of global warming won't be felt by ~40% of people living in high-income countries until >3°C. That is climate injustice. #COP29
Another sobering article again highlighting the obvious:
Our communities are largely not built to withstand marginally intense, let alone anomalously intense, weather events.
Building better and smarter won't reduce risk to zero, but you're giving yourself a much better chance to limit impacts.
Incredible photo from the aftermath of the Valencia flooding.

🚨Working Paper Alert!
In this work, me, @thorid.bsky.social, @joosakkerman.bsky.social, & @tatianafilatova.bsky.social, analyze the associations between different #climatechange adaptations and actors' constraints in adaptation to climate-induced #floods and #sea-level-rise.

“Should we intensify incremental #climate #change #adaptation or consider switching to #transformational?” is an important question to ask according to Deltacommissaris. In line w our VIDI: @joosakkerman @sof14g1l “But we have not yet found a private investor willing to put a € into some of these…”
