Thank you, Anna! I'm late to following up since I went right from the conference into a whirlwind of houseguests and travel, but I am so happy that you found value in my session. Hope to see you at the follow-up next month.

But there’s probably some obscure musical term or pasta shape or weird fish hidden in there that’s preventing me from reaching Queen Bee status without resorting to clues.

Then I started on the NYT Spelling Bee. No FUNNING: It’s a FUGGING mystery how they determine which words are acceptable and which are not.

It might be considered UNFILIAL to the memory of Daniel Webster to ignore perfectly cromulent words. Sometimes I am almost FAIN to call this puzzle UNFUN.

This morning I was FAFFING about on the intertubes and read an article that tried to justify shark FINNING and watched a video about FLANGING in music production. I also did a little research on wool FULLING for a project I want to try that also involves GAFFING tape.

The hatred I have for key phrase notes is deep and abiding, both as a reader and as a publishing professional who has to wrangle them. They do no one any favors.

Easing into the new year — I have just one project to work on this week, but a whole bunch of paperwork and personal stuff to catch up on after a crammed-full 2024.

TIL that the default spelling in MW for the drink is SLUSHY, not SLUSHIE.

This feels so wrong.

This was such a fun conversation! I'm happy we get to share it with others.

Thank you for this! It's so frustrating to come here and see nothing but reposts (I'm not sure what else some people do all day long?), and of course a bunch of people I follow are all reposting the same thing.

Ohhhhh, yessssss! 💰💰💰💰💰

That's great!

I've done a few crashes before, but this is the most ambitious one to date. My previous record was ~82K in 72 hours. I've refined my processes a bit since then and have some magic tricks to deal with low-hanging fruit.

I've also scheduled to take the rest of that week off.

Just signed on to do a crash copyedit: ~90K wds in 48 h.

Yes, that's… ambitious. And nuts. And definitely not recommended. But it is what it is. I'm pregaming by prepping some macros and search routines.

The manuscript likely won't be pretty, but it will be better than it started out. #amediting

This is an absolute delight!

Hello, Monday! I'm wrapping up a nonfiction edit and starting a fiction edit this week, and I'll be working hard to clear the decks to take most of next week off.

What's on your desk this week?

I love that feeling when you open up a manuscript and it ends up being half the size you remember it being.

Yay for a Friday afternoon off tomorrow!

The state of my brain: This morning, I came very close to microwaving my yogurt instead of my oatmeal.

I turned in the things that were due today, and I think it's time for an afternoon off.

I streamlined my Systems & Shortcuts presentation for #ACESVCON24 to leave more time for questions, so I'm doing a couple of run-throughs today to get the timing down.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Kory.

Loved that series! The series finale is one of the best episodes of TV of all time, IMO.

Thank you! I almost always use a mouse — I am Not Skilled with a trackpad. I often use Acrobat on my iPad (when I don't have to use stamps), so a smaller screen for that for the kinds of projects I'd be likely to work on there wouldn't be a problem.

I had one of those 17" beasts, too. Had to buy a special briefcase for it.

That's what I'm thinking: the portability might outweigh the inconvenience of having less real estate for arranging my windows.

Yeah, it's like air traffic control in my office with all the monitors etc.; this would be for doing basic Word/Acrobat work in the evenings and while traveling (and a backup machine, just in case), so it doesn't need to have all the bells & whistles. I don't want to feel TOO cramped, though.

Thanks — that's helpful! I'd be using it mostly for Word and for PDF proofing where I have to use the stamps.

I'm intrigued by the portability of the 13" — I could literally toss it into my purse — but I'm also used to the real estate of a 15" laptop.

(The iPad isn't an equivalent; as much as I love mine, I need an actual computer for mobile use and backup use.)

Any other editors with a 13" MacBook Air: Do you find the screen size adequate for occasional mobile work / backup? Or do you desperately wish you had the 15"?

I'm moving from a MacBook Pro to a Mac Studio for my main machine, but I need a laptop, too, for working elsewhere and travel.
