Moorhen chicks 2/2 #birds

On the River Gobela this morning there were 2 adult moorhens feeding 8 newly-hatched and particularly wretched-looking chicks. Not sure if that's both parents of a single large clutch or 2 clutches with different mothers. The chicks weren't bothered which adult was feeding them. 1/2 #birds

One of the things I love about living in Getxo is that in about an hour I can walk to the end of the sea front then cut inland & head home along the river Gobela.
There now seems to be only 1 surviving duckling from the clutch hatched a couple of weeks ago. #birds

The redshank got a bit too close for the liking of the little egret, which saw it off pretty sharpish. The pic is a bit blurred but I think it's still worth posting as an action shot 🤣 #birds

Conservation efforts in Europe often involve protecting nests in farmland to prevent destruction during the harvest. In Extremadura, there's an organization called ANSER, they do a tough work, protecting the Montagu's harrier nests with fences, to avoid the harvesting machines.
