Anyone every use a Seahorse analyzer to look at bacteria? I figure it *could* work if you can use it with isolated mitochondria but I'd love to use it with biofilms! It seems like a cool thing and eukaryotic people shouldn't have all the fun! #Microbiology 🦠

Uromodulin: from physiology to rare and complex kidney disorders - Nature Reviews Nephrology Uromodulin is the most abundant urinary protein. Here, the authors discuss the physiological roles of uromodulin, the mechanisms by which mutations in theUMOD gene, which encodes uromodulin, cause aut...

Pathogen-driven pressure selects for human UMOD genes that overproduce the urinary protein uromodulin, even though that overproduction can lead to kidney disease.

Important protection from UTIs during reproductive years > risk of kidney disease later in life.

A Neurobiotic Sense: Figure depicting a gut-brain sensory modality for microbial patterns. A mouse, gut lumen highlighted, shows recognition of bacterial flagellin by TLR5 and subsequent release of PYY protein from PYY neuropod cells. PYY binds to NPY2 receptors and via the vagus nerve signaling affects appetite choices of the mouse.

Gut-brain signaling: these gut cells can sense bacteria...and signal the brain to change behavior! Am I hungry? Maybe my #microbiome is trying to tell me something...

A neurobiotic sense "at the interface of the biota and the brain."

It’s a real mix. Bacteria, virus isolates, nuclei acid, protein, and clinical samples. They’d be for long term storage, nucleic acid purification, MS, sequencing. It’s really varied and interested in peoples’ experience in any of those categories.

Hi #microsky and #microbiome sky!

Would anyone be willing to share their experience with storing micro / pre-clinical / clinical samples at -70C for long term storage?

I know this an old discussion maybe, but wanted to check in for current practices / resources. Thanks!

Politeness is not the same as kindness.

Being polite is saying what makes people feel good today. Being kind is doing what helps people get better tomorrow.

When the norm is politeness, people withhold disagreement and criticism. When the norm is kindness, people speak their minds respectfully.

Map showing the number of houses still without power in Ireland after storm Éowyn, in the hundreds of thousands.

🥶 Each dot represents places on the grid where >10 houses are (still) out of power after Storm Éowyn here in Ireland.

(i.e. 50 here means at least 500 homes are still out of power!)
