York City Council vote to support proportional representation On Thursday March 26, during a ‘full council’ meeting at York’s Guildhall, an 80% supermajority of City of York Council (CYC) members voted in favour of a motion titled ‘Fair votes for all’ which endorsed Proportional Representation (PR) and called for a National Commission on Electoral Reform. CYC is the first local authority to approve such a motion since the 2024 general election.

🌹 Labour Councillor Tony Clarke said: “A fairer voting system would contribute to restoring trust and engagement in the democratic process”

👏 Great to see York Council calling for Proportional Representation - with the backing of York Labour group

Will Labour embrace electoral reform? The party has an uneasy relationship with the idea of changing voting systems. But looking at the path set by staying with FPTP, a growing section of the PLP is beginning to agitate for change.

'Labour must lead on electoral reform before Britain’s democratic crisis deepens' - LabourList With trust falling and fragmentation rising, Labour must lead o electoral reform before Britain’s democratic crisis worsens.

Luke is right here. Our current political system disenfranchises voters.

A first step to fixing this would be for the Government to bring forward a National Commission on Electoral Reform to give clear recommendations on how we fix our broken system.

It’s time to end Britain’s first-past-the-post election lottery The Gorton and Denton by-election confirmed just how capricious our electoral system has become

💥 Professor Vernon Bogdanor writes for @financialtimes.com:

"An electoral system should do two things: ensure that the majority rules and that significant minorities are adequately represented.

First Past the Post achieves neither."

Want to stop Farage with your vote? At the moment you can’t – and Starmer must fix that | Polly Toynbee The PM’s in-tray is overflowing. But he can’t afford to neglect the real issue that is distorting our politics and the way we live, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

“In Monday’s debate, Labour MPs were among many calling for a national commission on electoral reform…

The PM is pulled from pillar to post and his in-tray is no doubt full; still, this should be near the top of it.”
