"men continued to publish the same number of papers after becoming fathers, women experienced a significant drop in research output (mothers had 31% fewer publications than did fathers 8 years after the birth of their first child)"
Really neat piece of work in @plosbiology.org, inferring the hidden layer of "fitnotypes" that link genotypes to fitness, and finding surprisingly low dimensionality. From @oliviamghosh.bsky.social @grantkinsler.bsky.social @benjaminhgood.bsky.social & @petrovadmitri.bsky.social

Aging is messier, and more interesting, than a simple oxidative-stress story.

Shared earlier as a preprint, but NOW OUT in npj Aging! 🎉
We used experimental evolution to test the redox theory of aging under parasitism, and the answer was much less straightforward than expected: life-history divergence evolved clearly, but redox state only poorly predicted longevity.
I appreciate someone took the time to write this. I profoundly disagree with their view, but if I take the spirit of what they're saying as a good faith attempt to raise a mental issue, there's at least a conversation to be had.

I'm a big fan of bioRxiv, so it was fascinating to dig into the stats behind the rise of this preprint server from its first 13 or so years for Nature News @nature.com 🧪 @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social #preprints

At ~$1 billion/day, the US has spent as much on the war in Iran in ten days as the entire FY25 budget for the National Science Foundation ($10 billion).
Trump's FY26 budget request for the agency declined to $3.9 billion, due to a "realignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment."
Scientists, more than ever, have a responsibility to bridge the gap between science and the public, for more reasons than I could ever list.
Very grateful for the chance to give back to my hometown, Porto, last week — and hopefully inspire and educate a new generation of young minds 🫶
