We have a major problem. Many of the annotated images in the #FathomNetDatabase have sparse coverage–only 1 or some of the animals are labeled. We’re asking the #ComputerVision community for help to develop better object detectors.

The FathomNet Database is an open-source library for ML models and expertly labeled ocean imagery that can help us better understand marine life and ocean health. Our database will continue to grow with data contributed by @mbarinews.bsky.social, @schmidtocean.bsky.social, and more partners.
The FathomNet Database has been selected as one of 10 new datasets added to the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Pilot. We look forward to seeing how this integration can contribute to advances in machine learning and accelerate the analysis of ocean visual data.
We are thrilled to share that National Geographic Magazine’s September issue features @katycroffbell.bsky.social and the development of DORIS, a low-cost deep-sea imaging system created with @bluerobotics.bsky.social.

The response was extraordinary. 1,508 submissions from 109 participants made this our liveliest Kaggle competition yet. With 16 active discussion threads and over 60 comments, the dialogue was thoughtful, constructive, and technically deep.
