📄 Recent study explored trade-offs in sampling density vs frequency for the spatial stability of surface water quality patterns over time, across over 250 monitoring sites sampled over two decades.

Once abundant Lake Erie fish to be stocked Saturday at three Cuyahoga River sites The sturgeon population in Lake Erie was depleted starting in the 1800s and now efforts are underway to bring it back.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will release 2,000 fingerling sturgeon into the Cuyahoga River, hoping that in 15 to 20 years they will come back to reproduce.

DATA CENTER SERIES: The Impact on Minnesota Waters Residents worry that the data center will overshadow their own water needs, especially in the summer months. Tract developers convinced city officials to let data centers use municipal water supplies ...

Well said, Carrie Jennings, Freshwater Policy Director reflecting on the policy landscape for data centers.

“what we currently lack is a very clear path for stakeholders to figure out who to talk to” when it comes to standing up for their communities.”

"Beaver-engineered dam in the Czech Republic
Article Talk
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million, providing ecological benefits including improved water quality, enhanced biodiversity, and better water retention."

This morning, during some chaos, this zipped by on one of my feeds. Maybe it was here? Hard to overstate how much this made my day.

Study: 72% of Illinois wetlands no longer protected by federal Clean Water Act – News Bureau

A new study finds over 70% of Illinois wetlands lost protection after the Supreme Court’s rollback of the Clean Water Act.

Floodplain forests—vital for flood control, water quality, and climate resilience—are most at risk.

Illinois needs to pass a state law protecting wetlands.

New data reveals widespread contamination in New Zealand's waterways Two-thirds of monitored river sites and half of groundwater bores were affected by faecal contamination, while two-thirds of lakes were rated in poor or very poor condition.

Shocking but not surprising the way this government hands the dairy industry a licence to pollute👇

More than 3500 rivers, lakes and estuaries across Aotearoa are under pressure, with new data showing widespread faecal contamination and poor water quality — especially in areas of intensive land use.

In Key West, testing shows cruise ships stir up as much sediment as a hurricane Tests in Key West show sediment stirred up by cruise ships, which can harm marine life, routinely exceed federal standards. Key West has responded by suspending the tests.

A few weeks ago, I shared with the students of my “International Tourism” course this interesting, but worrisome, article. Key West in Florida has been studying how cruise ships docking affect the quality of water: it stirs up as much as sediment as a hurricane.

Beavers improve water quality
Several studies have found that beaver ponds reduce nitrogen pollution in watercourses – with many of the nitrates digested by the bacteria in the pond and others trapped by the sediments.

Global inland-water oxygen cycle has changed in the Anthropocene Inland waters are an increasing sink of oxygen as a result of faster oxygen turnover.

🌀 Oxygen sinks in inland waters

Inland waters have become massive sinks of atmospheric oxygen. From 1900–2010, oxygen consumption tripled due to more nutrients, warming, & damming rivers

These shifts may affect climate and water quality worldwide.

Our Hydrology/Hydrogeology/Water+ is now full (150 spots filled).

Wow! This was quick...yet, very time consuming thing to do.

However, it’s been great helping colleagues reconnect and make new contacts here.

Time for a well-earned break before thinking about Part 2. Cheers!
