We stumbled upon an unusual gene called 'rqua' in the genome of some freshwater sponges. In microbes, this gene confers the ability to make a ubiquinone analog - rhodoquinone - which can help the respiratory chain run without oxygen.
Prof David Drew and colleagues at Stockholm University and @scilifelab.se uncover how glucose transporters achieve specificity, bridging a long-standing gap between structure and function in membrane biology. The study is published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

@scilifelab.se decided to follow us during our lab and field work to document some of the cool research we do!! 😁
Check it out below!! ☺️
(2/2) In the video, we follow @mafaldaferreira.bsky.social and her group, as they study species of #hares and #ptarmigans, and their ability to alternate color. 🧪🌍 ↓
youtu.be/llCvotNH5to
SciLifeLab Fellow and Stockholm University researcher Mafalda Ferreira and PhD student Maja Svedberg photograph museum specimens of ptarmigans, to understand how they change colors. Visible: the two researchers are photographed from behind, when Mafalda Ferreira is setting up the camera that is standing on a tripod in a white photo tent.
(1/2) To study #SeasonalAdaptation, @mafaldaferreira.bsky.social (SciLifeLab / @stockholm-uni.bsky.social) do #fieldwork in remote parts of the world, measure color of specimens in museum collections and work in the wet lab and do computational work. ↓ 🖥️🧬🧪🌍
