I’m pleased to share this recent article in the German newspaper taz, highlighting our work on documenting Saydnaya prison and preserving the memory of Syria’s detention system.

One Thousand and One Nights in Saydnaya Prison
We are exhibiting this old Arabic volume in our Berlin exhibition on Saydnaya Prison. It contains three stories — Judar, The Girls of Baghdad, and Qamar al-Zaman — and belonged to the prison library built by prisoners over many years in the 1990s.
We are exhibiting this old Arabic edition of Goethe’s The Sorrows of Werther in our Berlin exhibition, alongside a wider collection of books and personal belongings from Saydnaya Prison — including letters, hidden messages, and other traces of prison life.
Now open in Berlin

We welcome visitors daily during official opening hours.
I spoke at length in this DW Arabic interview about the reuse of Assad regime prisons, the inheritance of prison systems in Syria, and my last detention in September.
I also tried to address a central question: has the prison nightmare truly ended in post-Assad Syria?

What did it mean for Syrian families to visit a loved one inside Saydnaya Military Prison?
This video investigation focuses on the visit itself: the procedures, the waiting, and the suffering that accompanied every attempt by families to see detained sons and relatives.

I recently spoke with @Daraj_media about memory, justice, and the long road from detention and exile to return.
I shared a glimpse of my recent arrest in Syria, and the continuing risks faced by journalists and human rights defenders there.

We’re excited to launch the Prisons Museum Foundation website: www.prisons.museum/en
A platform dedicated to documenting prisons, preserving memory, and amplifying survivors’ voices.

🎙️ With DW’s Studio Al-Hadath, I spoke about the ISIS Prisons Museum and its largest file — Hisba Diwan: thousands of detainees, dozens of prisons, and years of investigations & survivor testimonies.

🏚 Once a traditional home in Mosul’s Old City, #ISIS turned it into a Hisba prison.
Our 3D reconstruction took 3 years of work:
📜 1,000+ documents analyzed
🗣️ 7 survivors from this prison interviewed
🗣️ Dozens from other Hisba prisons in Mosul

Leaked CCTV from Suwayda Hospital (July 16, 2025) shows gov. forces shelling the building, assaulting staff, and executing civilians — one killer wore an ISIS patch.
We’re investigating these crimes just as we did ISIS & Assad crimes. Justice must be universal.

Yusuf Al-Labbad was not killed in a vacuum.
His death is a direct result of unchecked crimes, official lies, and a system built on impunity.
Every crime we fail to confront becomes permission for the next.

Yusuf Al-Labbad walked into the Umayyad Mosque alive — and left as a corpse.
The official story? He “hit his head on hard objects” by himself in a guarded room.
No cameras. No witnesses. No medical report.
This wasn’t suicide.
It’s state violence — again.

In Paris, Asaad al-Shaibani of the HTS-backed Syrian “transitional govt” met Israeli officials under U.S. mediation.
In Suwayda, civilians are killed over false accusations of Israeli ties.
Who defines treason—and for whose benefit?

Civil resistance is possible—even under ISIS.
We spent months working on this investigation about Raqqa’s nonviolent resistance during ISIS rule. It’s now live on:

Authoritarian terror doesn’t erase the will to resist.
It just makes resistance harder.
Silence enables the crime.
If the current authorities in Damascus don’t act now, they are no different from those before them.
And they are opening the door to another forever war.
Hama 1982 → Sweida 2025
The Assad dictatorship began with a massacre.
Today, a new one is forming in Sweida.
If it’s not stopped now, we may be entering a new era of endless, blood-soaked rule—this time by warlords and “de facto” authorities, not just one man.
What’s happening in Sweida is heartbreaking.
A place that once stood with dignity and defiance is now being dragged into a dirty war of revenge, tribalism, and silence.
We fought for freedom, dignity, and justice—not for this.
After analyzing thousands of ISIS documents, we published a new investigation on the Hisba Diwan — the system of religious policing under ISIS.
How it worked, how it justified repression, and how it helped build the illusion of a state.

Today is my brother Mohammed Nour Matar’s birthday.
He was taken by ISIS in 2013 and we’ve heard nothing since.
We searched every prison, every village, every wall.
We built a museum for him.
And we will keep searching.
Because he’s brave. Because he matters. Because he’s my brother.
The ISIS Prisons Museum expresses its deep sorrow over the bombing that targeted the Mar Elias Church in Damascus, claiming the lives of more than 25 civilians and injuring dozens of others.
بجب تجريم الدعشنة في سوريا، مثل تجريم الأسدية.
Heartbroken by the horrific attack on St. Elias Church in Damascus. Dozens were killed and injured while praying.
My deepest condolences to the families of the victims and all members of the Syrian Christian community.
Violence against worshippers is a crime against us all.
