Hi - sorry to be belated! Brief is like 2 paragraphs, yes, though if you're not sure just query us: we want diversity of fandom and approach, so the fandom and the topic and the story matter. We expect most essays will be written by academics but we are certainly not against fans submitting!

Oh I missed this - no, we don't have a policy. Encouraged but not mandated if the story is in the public eye/open internet.
