Jokes about deporting people are bad whoever makes them. They are orders of magnitude worse if the person making them is the one who actually has the power to deport people. I don't care that she was on a comedy podcast, the context does not make it better. She's the Home Secretary, for God's sake.

The only correct answer to that question is something along the lines of "That is a ridiculous question and you should be ashamed of asking it"

She should be sacked immediately for this.

An idiotic question, and an upsetting answer.

What the hell

I can't get over a Home Secretary saying that because racist British people are racist to her, it follows that she has to be cruel and racist to immigrants who have done absolutely nothing wrong. Some profoundly evil and warped logic.

Thank you!

Nothing good can happen about immigration policies as long as Starmer and Mahmood are in power. They both need to resign (and Starmer could gain a little bit of praise from me if he sacked her, but he won't). Then maybe we will get a non-xenophobic Labour leadership.

Maybe @walkridegm.org.uk or @walkridesalford.bsky.social can help?

A road sign and an orange traffic cone partially blocking a segregated cycle lane. The sign announces a road closure taking place on the 3rd of May from 7am to 12pm.

UK/Manchester people: to whom can I report this sign partially blocking the cycle lane? The road may be closed on the 3rd of May, in the meantime they've decided to block the bike lane.

With "it's racist to criticise my racist policies" we've really reached peak absurdism. If it were not real it would be comical.

If you defend immigrants' rights and oppose cruelty to asylum seekers you are the real racist, says Shabana Mahmood.

Levels of immigration are plummeting! They're not high anymore. Her reforms will hurt a ton of people who already live in this country, many of whom are ethnic minorities. But they're not British, so she's fine with cruelty directed at them. Such a hateful politician.

I'm afraid he will be cooked if they are relegated.

Aside from everything else, the expression "settler resident" is basically nativism dressed up as concern for local residents. The same kind of language the far right employs about immigrants. As it happens I'm an immigrant, I moved last year to my local area and I want safe streets, I'm the worst.

"Settler resident" what the hell

It's nearly ten years since #Beelines #BeeNetwork and we've got the Chorlton Cycleway and a few junction improvements, it's just not enough. All the main roads into Manchester should have fully segregated lanes & junctions as a priority.

I sometimes have been on a bike ride and saw a very nice pub which could have been a good place for me to stop and have lunch. Huge car park, not even a small bike rack. I went somewhere else.

Some places have huge car parks and not a single space to park bikes. This should not happen anymore, especially if the place was built recently!

21 hours ago 3 0 1 0

Another point: if we want to promote active travel and cycling (we should), we need better parking options for bicycles. I've been to a few places where I wanted to stop but there was no place for me to park my bike securely. Some local businesses have lost at least one customer (me) due to this.

Is the network safe enough for children to use? For old people? Disabled people? If the answer is 'no' then it needs to be better. We can do it, so let's do it.

If a road is large enough for multiple lanes of traffic, there's no reason why one lane should not be used as a large, safe, segregated cycle lane instead.

We have some good bits and some very good bits, but it's all quite disconnected and we still have too many painted cycle lanes that will suddenly interrupt to make way for car parking.

Greater Manchester could be an amazing place for cycling and active travel but we need our political leaders to be bolder and quicker in the delivery of a good (and connected!) network of bike lanes. We also need to tackle pavement parking which is a major problem in many areas.

If Starmer is looking for a new job when he resigns, I hear there may soon be an opening for a new Tottenham manager.

We can't really have a functioning democracy with a press that constantly pumps this trash into the public domain.

The proposed Earned Settlement reform is actually worse than what the Tories did in government, especially because it will retrospectively apply to people already in the country. It's just appalling what this government is doing, until they get rid of Mahmood and Starmer I don't see them changing.

I checked this too.

*20 seconds* of Reform logo display.

*No other* party logo displayed.

In local election purdah.

This is not normal. At all.

A piece very much worth reading.

There's an alarming number of people on Facebook who seem to believe that Manchester city centre is a crime-ridden hellscape when it is...fine? Even quite nice, if you ask me.
