Important stuff from @katjadiehl.bsky.social, linking childrenβs exclusion from their streets to both car-centrism and adultism (which are of course connected):
βhow deeply adultism is ingrained in our cities β and how it robs children of what they need most: freedom, movement and self-efficacyβ

We underestimate childrenβs abilities to bike their own bike for transportation because our infrastructure doesnβt work for children. My daughter can easily bike over 5 miles, which is around the distance of many errands, but my fear of her safety holds us back from taking those trips.
β When you have kids, you need a car.
βοΈ When you have kids, you need comfortable, convenient, safe bicycle infrastructure.*
*Also when you don't have kids.
Very good, evidence-based comment piece about low-traffic neighbourhoods - and how opponents often use them as a proxy for problems which are caused instead by too many cars.

Two kids in what I presume is an electric off-road ATV made for kids fuzzy picture of them driving around in the grass
Can we please stop normalizing #Motonormativity with our children?
By not introducing them to transportation alternatives, we limit their growth and the future health of our communities
Elevated highway in central Seoul
Daylighted river and great public park that replaced the elevated highway in central Seoul
Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved public transit, not only did it TRANSFORM the cityβs public life and economic success, but the car traffic got better.
The car traffic got BETTER.
In 1985 there is a line of car parking on the right and double car parking in the central verge. Today almost all the car parking is gone and replaced by cycle parking

This tunnel should be just for bikes!!!!! #Silvertowntunnel #mumsforlungs #bikesvscars
If you want children to be able to safely cycle in your city then you need protected cycle tracks that continue through junctions
I highly recommend the book, Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster. Dana Thomas was a style reporter for WaPost and Newsweek. She was able to get into factories that made luxury goods

A picture of the base of my cargo bike with helmets and orange blanket and a blue green scarf used to keep a childβs hair nice and smooth under a helmet
People often cite hair as a reason to not like wearing helmets.
As itβs not really a choice for my children, and one of them likes to have beautiful smooth hair, we needed a solution for helmets.
We found that using a silk scarf under the helmet really makes a big difference!
This evening @hackneycouncil.bsky.social Streetscene Team presented to the scrutiny commission on the transport strategy. Most people walk around Hackney (see photo) and most donβt have access to a car.

A mum and her two young children, casually cycling along a safe, protected cycle track in the Dutch countryside next to a main road, but a world away from danger. This is what freedom looks like when you design for people, not just cars
A pleasure to see so many kids enjoying the Enfield Road playstreet in the sunshine today. Now we just need to stop drivers from driving and parking on the pavement outside Hackney New Primary. @transportforlondon.bsky.social @greenerhackney.bsky.social
Looking forward to our zero emissions network event next week. Lots of local #hackney organisations coming to talk about how to get about with zero emissions. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/zero-emiss... @greenerhackney.bsky.social

Another fantastic Enfield Road playstreet today and lovely to meet @sarahwoodberrydown.bsky.social who came to show her support and see some of the problems we have with streets in this area. #StreetsforKids
Itβs simple reallyβ¦If you make streets safe and enjoyable to walk and cycle then kids will walk and cycle to school. π
#KidicalMassLond really was out of this world today! Thanks to @ibikelondon.bsky.social marshals, music bikes, feeder ride leaders @rahario.bsky.social and organisers, I loved @cleancitiescampaign.org #CarSpreading campaign stickers/items coming along too! π« We made space for kids π Thank you all!
Thank you so much for organising this @zeroemissions.bsky.social !!! π If any more feeder rides get organised please send us details and we will share!
The next Kidical Mass is this Sunday! Join hundreds of others in having fun #Cycling through London whilst highlighting the dangers that SUVs pose to cyclists and pedestrians. @ibikelondon.bsky.social @kidicalmasslond.bsky.social
